Southern
Observations
(Continued from Page 6)
to lift eyebrows in surprise.
Reason for sudden spurt in
business was the Maryland Welfare
Fund Campaign which topped all
drives for overseas relief launched
this year. Set as a quota for the
city and state was the sum of
$226,000, was passed by the end
of the drive with the total of
$277,000—an excess of $11,000.
This Man Is My Brother
(Continued from Page 6)
countenance has taken a fixed
mask of tragedy. He is coming to
my desk to say “Gar nichts.”
I DON’t KNOW what to do about
him anymore. Not that I am mak
ing any appeal for him; I abhor
making appeals. But why should
he be on my conscience alone?
Why should the destiny of one of
these uprooted people be left to
the concern of individuals?
SOMEHOW ALL THIS has to
do also with the matter of a Jew
ish welfare drive that is going on
in our city (an in many another
place.) I heard of a lady who ask
ed her husband to reduce his sub
scription this year.
“But we mustn’t do that,” he
answered. “We should be thankful
we can give, considering what
Jews are suffering in Germany
and Poland.”
“If we give too much to the wel
fare we won’t be able to get the
new Buick,” his wife replied.
