Counter Plot
Branded Hoax
LONDON (WNS)—A report of
a gigantic Jewish "counter-offen
sive” against persecutors of Jews
in Fascist countries to be organiz
ed at a secret conference of “great
international Jewish financiers”
meeting in a village near Geneva,
Switzerland, was published in the
London Sunday Chronicle and
promptly branded as a fake by
Jewish leaders in London and Par
is. Neville Laski. president of the
Board of Deputies of British Jews,
denied there was any truth in the
sensational yam and said that
neither he nor any of his associates
knew a thing about it. Similar
denials were made by responsible
Jewish leaders in Paris. The Sun
day Chronicle’s report alleged that
the conference would raise a fund
of $2,500,000,000 to smash the cur
rencies of Germany, Poland. Aus
tria and Roumania by gigantic op
erations on the world’s markets,
and would organize a mass boy
cott against the products of anti-
Semitic countries throughout Eu
rope. These measures, the Chron
icle. said, were intended to under
mine the economic basis of all
countries where Jews are being
persecuted.
NEW YORK (WNS)—St. John’s
Hospital in Brooklyn, which is
maintained by the Church Charity
Foundation of the Protestant Epis
copal Diocese of Long Island, is
treasuring a unique testimonial
presented to it by an aged rabbi
whose life was saved last summer
by the hospital. Fully recovered
from an attack of heart disease,
Rabi Elias Margulies of the Dean
Street Temple, appeared at the
hospital on New Year’s Day and
presented the Rev. Charles Henry
Webb, director, with an illuminat
ed scroll containing the following
message: “I was saved by the skill
of the physicians whom God gave
power and the will my prayer to I
fulfill. And the wonderful nurses
of the hospital staff treated me
fine; I therefore want to express
my thanks—it was divine. God
I bless you for the fine work you
do in helping those who are sick
to become well and strong. I thank
you.”
Wide Boycott Of Roumania
Threatened By U. S. League As
Panic Follows Gog a’s Measures
New York (WNS)—Comment
ing on the fantastic report in the
Sunday Chronicle of London, Dr.
Cyrus Adler, president of the
American Jewish Committee, said
he had "no information concern
ing this movement'* and added **I
doubt the truth of the report. I
am quite certain that there is no
movement of the kind under way.
There may be a few uneasy indi
viduals who are talking of such
a move, but certainly we have not
been approached on the subject.”
Similar denials were voiced by
Sol M. Stroock, chairman of the
Committee’s executive, and Ed
ward S. Greenbaum, member of
the executive. Mr. Stroock said
he “could not imagine that there
was the slightest possibility of
truth in the report.”
Priests Hold
Protest Meet
ST. PAUL (WNS)—What is pro
bably the first public anti-Nazi
Catholic meeting convened in the
United States is to be held in St.
Paul’s municipal auditorium un
der the patronage of Archbishop
John Gregory Murray, who has in
vited the priests of the St. Paul
archdiocese to attend a prelimi
nary conference today. Accord
ing to the American Jewish World,
the sponsors of the meeting plan
to adopt resolutions addressed to
Secretary of State Hull asking the
United States government to use
its good offices toward abandon
ment of the Nazi program of per
secuting religion, as well as ap
pealing to Germany’s diplomatic
representatives in this country for
their cooperation toward the same
end. In asking the priests to at
tend today’s meeting, Archbishop
Murray said the mass rally will
provide the public with an oppor
tunity to "express sympathy to
their brethren in Germany for the
loss of the fundamental rights of
liberty which are so essential to
their religious and civic welfare.”
Decision On
College Group
Is Changed
New York (WNS)—New York
City’s board of higher education,
which unwittingly granted permis
sion to the American Guards, an
avowedly anti-Semitic and mili
tary organization, to meet on the
property of the College of the City
of New York, after overruling a
faculty committee which had re
fused permission, will reverse its
action at the January meeting. The
board of higher education, which
includes a number of Jews, coun
termanded the faculty’s ruling be
cause it did not know that the
American Guards was anti-Jewish.
Several weeks ago James Ballsam,
assistant to Dean John R. Turner
of the evening session, rejected on
application from the American
Guards for permission to form a
City College unit. The refusal,
which was upheld by a faculty
committee, was based on the fact
that the organization said it would
"consist of members of the Aryan
race and Christian faith” and
would be organized on a semi
military basis. In appealing from
the faculty decision to the board
of higher education, the Ameri
can Guards merely asked for a
meeting room in the college and
concealed its anti-Semitic and mil
itaristic character, describing itself
as engaged “in combating Com
munism with the same means that
are used for its propagation in the
college.” On the basis of this in
formation which was only later
discovered to be misinformation,
the board, without any further in
vestigation, ruled on December
17th that the American Guards had
a right to meet in the college.
GRAVE CONCERN was first expressed about the fate of Mme.
Magda Lupescu, paramour of King Carol, after her flight from Rou-
mania. Now reported safe, she awaits word from Premier Goga,
who, it is said, has assured her of his friendship. In this picture, one
of the few ever taken of the couple, King Carol stands by Mme.
Lupetiru's side.
Survey Reveals New York
Jewry Has 800,000 Employed
New York (WNS)—New York City has about 800,000
gainfully employed Jews and more than 125,000 Jews on
relief projects, according to an estimate contained in a pre-
liminary study of the ocupational
distribution of Jews, just com
pleted under the auspices of the
Committee on Jewish Relations.
Jews form 27% of the employed
and employable population of the
city, which includes 3,379,000 gain
ful workers according to the 1930
census. The report shows that
one-fourth of all gainful Jewish
workers in New York City are en
gaged in the manufacturing indus
try and one-fourth in trade, while
of the general population one-
fifth are engaged in manufacturing
and one-sixth in trade. In New
York City’s 34,000 factories, one-
third of the workers are Jewish.
In the field of trade 41% of the
persons thus occupied are Jews.
The proportion of Jewish gainful
workers is greater in the retail
than in the wholesale trade. Jews
are heavily represented in the
fields of retail apparel and retail
furniture as well as in retail drug
stores and food stores. The Jews
gainfully occupied in trade consist
of over 90% employes as dis
tinguished from proprietors.
Kettletown Gets
Breathing Spell
Southbury, Conn. (WNS)—Hav
ing succeeded in halting work on
the construction of a Nazi camp
in the Kettletown section of this
town until after the adoption of a
local zoning ordinance which for
bids the establishment of a camp
or drilling within the town, the
town authorities, through Alrick
E. Nelson, grand juror and prose
cutor, dismissed charges of vio
lating the Sabbath law against
Richard Koehler and Gustav Korn,
members of the German-Ameri-
can Bund, who were arrested sev
eral weeks ago for working on the
camp site on a Sunday. After the
dismissal of the charges the
two Nazis said no further work
would be done on the camp until
the spring by which time its legal
status is expected to be determined.
ENGLAND FACES PARTITION CRISES
New Haven, Conn. (WNS)—Dr.
Edward Sapir, Sterling professor
of linguistics at Yale University,
was elected president of the Ameri
can Anthropological Association at
fhe close of its annual convention.
Tripoli (WNS)—A 50% increase
jn the Jewish population of Ital-
lan Limya in the last 26 years is
reported in the latest census.
LONDON (WNS-Palcor Agen
cy)—The British cabinet is now
in the midst of one of its most ser
ious crises, with the resignation
of the Colonial Secretary possible,
as a result of differences of opin
ion regarding British policy in
Palestine, it was asserted by the
Daily Herald. Influential mem
bers of the cabinet, the Laborite
newspaper reports, are pressing
Prime Minister Neville Chamber-
lain to reverse the present policy
and demanding the “freezing” of
the Jewish National Home as it
now exists.
The cabinet is being urged to
abandon the program of partition
as recommended by the Peel Royal
Commission as being harmful to
British interest among the Arabs.
"The abandonment of the Jewish
National Home as conceived by the
Balfour Declaration,” the Herald
Egypt Frowns
Cairo (YV N S)— Unofficial
protests by the Egyptian gov
ernment are said to be respon
sible for the sudden cancellation
of a visit to Egypt in January
by Nazi Propaganda Minister
Joseph Goebbels. Officially the
visit was called off because of
| Goebbels’ health.
states, is the objective of the Min
isters responsible for the serious
cleavage. Because of his strong
advocacy of the tri-partite par
tition scheme as the solution of the
Arab-Jewish problem in Palestine,
which has intensified Arab hos
tility to Britain, W. G. A. Ormsby-
Gore’s resignation as Colonial
Secretary is being sought, it is
said.
Referring to the prediction by
the Daily Telegraph’s diplomatic
correspondent that a White Paper
to be issued next week will en
large the powers of the new par
tition scheme beyond those origi
nally contemplated, the Manches
ter Guardian denies the possibili
ty of such action. Great Britain
has promised the Council of the
League that the sole purpose of
the commission is to conduct ne
gotiations with Arabs and Jews for
the formulation of a scheme of par
tition which will then be submitted
to League approval, the Guardian
points out. The Government, it
declares, is, therefore, unable to
assign wider powers to the new
commission.
The new commission entrusted
with execution of the partition
program will be entrusted with a
wider latitude than was originally
contemplated, it was Jtated by the
diplomatic correspondent of the
London Telegraph. *
NEW YORK (WNS)—Extension
of the anti-Nazi economic boy
cott to all goods exported from
Roumania was threatened by Sam
uel Untermyer. president of the
Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League,
in a came to Premier Octavian
Goga warning him that the organi
zation would apply the boycott to
Roumania if its "published, inhu
man, anti-Semitic threats are-
transmitted into action.” Mr. Un
termyer told Goga that he should
study the "effect of the boycott on
Germany’s export trade before
acting.” The League revealed
that its affiliates in England had
cabled their readiness to enforce
a Roumanian boycott, one of them
having already amended its con
stitution so that it could boycott
Roumania. Roumania’s exports to
the United States for the first 10
months of 1937 amounted to $4,-
471,261.
MASS EXODUS
Buchar st (WNS)—While Rou
manian Jewry continued to look
to King Carol to prevent the carry
ing out of the announced anti-
Jewish program of Premier Oc
tavian Goga and his anti-Semitic
cabinet, thousands of Jews in the
villages prepared for a mass ex
odus in conformity with a new
decree forbidding Jews to live in
any village. This was the most
serious of the first anti-Jewish
measures proclaimed by the Goga
government. The Goga govern
ment is also reported to be prepar
ing to divide the Jews into three
categories: 1—war veterans and
their children who will be regarded
as “worthy Roumanian citizens”
and not molested; 2—Jews who
for "good reasons did not partici
pate in the World War and who
will be judged individually on
their post-war record; 3—Jews
who were “war-slackers” or post
war immigrants, and against whom
the most repressive measures will
be taken.
IN 8YNAGOGUE8
Meanwhile scenes reminiscent of
events in Berlin and other large
German cities in April, 1933 were
being enacted throughout Rou
mania as tens of thousands of Jews,
including many who had long been
estranged from Jewry, jammed
every available synagogue for spe
cial prayers and the recitation of
"Has Chivinu,” the traditional
Jewish chant reserved for occa
sions of great danger. Everywhere
Jews were seeking out Jews whom
they had previously scorned or
ignored. At the same time busi
ness throughout the country is
undergoing a serious slump because
Jewish merchants are not placing
orders and cancelling those already
made. Liquidation of Jewish en
terprises is proceeding rapidly.
SOME HOPEFUL
Jewish leaders in Bucharest are
seeking to allay the panic in Jew
ish circles, emphasizing that mat
ters could be much worse had the
more violently anti-Semitic Iron
Guard entrusted with the forma
tion of a government. The Jews
also were heartened by the cable
sent from Geneva by former For
eign Minister Nicholas Titulescu
offering his aid in fighting Rou
manian Fascism to Dr. Julius
Maniu, leader of the National Pea
sant Party. The surreptitious de
parture from the country of Mme.
Magda Lupescu, Jewish-bom pa
ramour of King Carol, and the an
nouncement by the Iron Guard
that it would not contest the next
elections also helped allay some
of the fear of the Jewish popula
tion . Even the government sought
indirectly to ease Jewish anxiety
by announcing that Premier Goga
would receive Theodore Fischer,
president of the Jewish Party, and
by permitting the official news
agency to deny that the govern
ment’s nationalistic policy was
based on racial supremacy.
