“MANNEQUIN"
A Metro-Gold wyn-Mayer produc
tion starring Joan Crawford and
Aprnrrr Tracy, with Alan CurtL*.
Ralph Morgan, Mary Phillips and
Elisabeth R tad on. Directed by
Frank Donate
The glamour girls of Hollywood
are finding a new field for their
talents in zany comedy, but the
top glamour vendor of them all,
Joan Crawford, proves in her new
vehicle, “Mannequin", now current
at LoeW’s Grand, that there is still
a place in cinema fiction for the
romantic "rags to riches" formula
which she has mude famous. Miss
Crawford's new picture, let it be
■aid at the outset, is her best in
several years, and it should re
establish her ns the warm, glowing
actress of the “Grand Hotel" and
“Possessed” school.
“Mannequin” is the story of Jes
sie, an ambitious girl who escapes
from the squalor of Hester Street
by marrying Eddie, a shady, al
beit appealing, suitor. Eddie, ns
Jessie soon learns, is a supreme
egoist who is not above capitaliz
ing on his wife's beauty. Jessie
divorces her husbnnd and becomes
the bride of a wealthy shipbuilder.
Her happiness is threatened by
Eddie’s blackmail scheme, but the
maritime strike, which leaves her
husband no longer a target for Ed
die’s plot, spells a happy ending.
The star is sincere und believ
able in her effective transition
from slum girl to mannequin, and
her scenes with Spencer Tracy, as
her wealthy husband, are touched
with tenderness and restraint.
Alan Curtis, a newcomer, shows
promise in the role of Eddie.
