GERMANY BANS
‘DER STUERMER’
Berlin (WNS)—Der Stuermer, Julius Streicher’s violent
ly anti-Semitic newspaper, has been banned indefinitely and
its special issue devoted to “racial pollution” and demanding
the death penalty for Jews guilty of it has been seized, ac
cording to an announcement of the Propaganda Ministry. Der
Stuermer’s last regular issue had
also been confiscated because it
attacked the Foreign Exchange
Control OfTice for issuing foreign
exchange to Jews so tnat they
could study in Switzerland.
OPPOSE PARTITION OF PALESTINE
Members of the American Jewish Committee who led the passage of the resolution adopted at the
thirty-first annual meeting of the organization in New York opposing the partition of Palestine and
pledging cooperation in bringing about a "just, equitable and workable solution of the Palestine prob
lem." Left to right, Sol M. Stroock, chairman of the Executive Committee; I)r. Cyrus Adler, presi
dent of the American Jewish Committee, and Judge Irving Lehman, of the New York State Court of
Appeals, as they appeared on the rostrum at the meeting.
Warners Ban
March of Time
As Pro-German
NEW YORK (WNS)—Warner
Brothers theatres have excluded
“Inside Nazi Germany, 1938," the
March of Time’s current newsreel,
because “in the opinion of the large
number of company officials who
have seen it, it may be interpreted
as pro-Nazi propaganda," it was
announced by Harry M. Warner,
president of Warner Brothers Pic
tures, Inc., in explaining why his
firm has banned the picture. Mr.
Warner said “I am informed that
most of the portion of this film
showing Nazi activities within Ger
many was made in the form of si
lent pictures with the consent and
necessarily with the approval of
Dr. Goebbels, minister of propa
ganda—as indeed must all motion
pictures be that are made in Ger
many.
“It is true that the remarks of
the commentator, added to this si
lent film in this country, tend to
counteract to some extent the ef
fect of the silent film. But the ef
fect and appeal of a motion picture
is to the eye primarily. Careful
analysis has proven that the words
of commentators when used in con
nection with motion pictures have
but a small effect as against the
great effect of what Is shown on the
screen. In our opinion the film
remains pro-Nazi propaganda. This
film has already been shown on
several motion picture theatres
where portions of the audience
hissed and jeered the picture and
others have applauded it. We do
not intend to make our screens a
medium for the dissemination of
propaganda for Germany no mat
ter how thinly veiled that purpose
may be. Our screens are reserved
for the presentation of entertain-
mnt of highest quality.”
Henry R. Luce, president of
Time, Inc., producers of the pic
ture, called Warner’s statement
“ridiculous” and added that War
ner’s attitude about sound in mo
tion pictures is “amazing,” coming
from “the man generally credited
with introducing the talking pic
ture. Evidently Mr. Warner does
not believe the movie industry
capable of any honest pictorial
treatment of any matter of impor
tance.”
Rumania Faces Economic
Crisis In New Policy
BUCHAREST (WNS)—All Jews in the provices acquired
by Rumania after the World War who cannot present docu
mentary proof of their right to Rumanian citizenship within
20 to 30 days will be de-naturalized
Atlantans’ Kin
To Write Life
Of Dr. Masaryk
Dr. Job Ungar, of Czechoslova
kia, has been contracted by pub-
j Ushers in Budapest to write the
biography of the late Dr. Thomas
G. Masaryk, founder and president
of Czechoslovakia, it was learned
this week by his brother, Bernard
Ungar, of 873 Vevado Way. The
Czechoslovakian attorney is also
the brother of Mrs. Jenny Nelson,
Mrs. Rose Glass and the late Mrs.
Esther Bleich, of Atlanta.
A personal friend of President
Masaryk, Dr. Ungar was chosen to
deliver the eulogy at his funeral
services in September, 1937. His
friendship with the great Czecho
slovakian leader, and in turn the
esteem in which he was held by the
statesman, qualifies Dr. Ungar as
the ideal person to write the Mas
aryk biography.
In the letter to Bernard Ungar
bring news of the honor accorded
his brother, it was stated that as
the result of the boycotts against
major European powers, Czecho
slovakia is enjoying prosperity.
according to a new decree issued
by the Goga cabinet. The decree
also demands that Jews who lived
in Rumania before the war prove
their citizenship. Both classes of
Jews are meanwhile removed from
the electoral lists, which means
that all Rumanian Jewry is dis
franchised. The documentary proof
called for is of such a character
that few Jews can produce it.
Among the papers required are
a certificate proving that the hold
er was a taxpayer on November
18, 1918 and another proving that
he had a legal residence in what
is now Rumania on March 27, 1918.
Since tens of thousands of Jews
were in the Rumanian army dur
ing those periods while others were
forced to move because of the war
few will be able to present such
documents. Failure to produce
them, however, will be equivalent
to relinquishment of citizenship.
An economic crisis of panic pro
portions is beginning to engulf the
country as a result of the anti-
Jewish measures. All the banks
are experiencing runs. Manufac
turers report huge drops in orders
with the consequent increase of
unemployment. Prices of com
modities are falling rapidly. Bank
ruptcies are increasing. Real es
tate values are crashing every
where.
Canada Open
To Farm Settlers
Officials Say
OTTAWA, CANADA (WNS)—
Criticising Jewish relief organiza
tions for not making sufficient ef
forts to negotiate with the Cana
dian government concerning Jew
ish agricultural colonization, offi
cials of the department of immi
gration declared that the gates of
Canada are now open to any Jew
prepared to settle on the land. As
serting that while the Canadian
government has welcomed Jewish
immigrants ready to settle on land
since 1867 Ohly 1V4% of Canadian
Jewry is now on the land or con
nected with agriculture, the offic
ials declared that permanent Jew
ish settlement is possible on the
fertile and virgin areas in the Ca
nadian West and in northern On
tario or Quebec.
Melbourne, Australia (WNS)—
Premature publicity for a propos
ed scheme to colonize hundreds of
thousands of Jews on unoccupied
territory in Kimberly, Northwest
Australia, may have destroyed
whatever possibility of realization
the plan had. A ranking official
of the government has informed
Jewish organizations that “if Jews
have in the future proposals to
submit to the Australian govern
ment, it is essential not to indulge
in publicity until after the govern
ment has considered the proposal.
Otherwise, there is danger of pre
judging the issues although the
details are unknown.” The Jewish
colonization scheme, outlined by
Dr. Steinberg, secretary of the
Freiland League for Jewish Colo
nization, in a statement to Rey
nolds News, a London paper, and
cabled to Australia by news agen
cies, created a great sensation here.
It was immediately greeted with
derision and opposition in the Aus
tralian press while Jewish leaders
expressed concern lest the pub
licity given the plan create un
founded hopes among the Jews of
Eastern Europe. Colonization au
thorities declare that the territory
proposed for Jewish settlement
cannot be used for that purpose.
B’NAl B’RITH TO UNDERTAKE
VOCATIONAL SURVEY, SAYS BISGYER
BRAZIL SWEEPING
HER HOUSE CLEAN
Rio de Janeiro (WNS)—Declar
ing that Nazi agitation is violative
of Brazil’s national interests, Police
Chief Jose da Costa of Porto Alegre
ordered the immediate closing of
Nazi headquarters. He said he had
already warned the editors of some
German newspapers in the state of
Porto Alegre that “they must
cease publishing articles and ad
vertisements inviting readers to
support the ideas of Hitler."
Vocational guidance for Jewish
youth on a national scale has been
adopted by the B'nai B’rith order
as the newest project in its program
it was revealed here Tuesday by
Maurice Bisgyer, executive secre
tary, who was principal speaker of
the monthly meeting of the Gate
City Lodge the same evening.
Visiting Atlanta for the first time,
although he is no stranger to the
South, the B’nai B’rith leader spoke
enthusiastically of the vocational
program, which is based upon the
survey made over a period of years
by Dr. Lee J. Levinger, of Colum
bus, Ohio.
“The establishment of the B’nai
B’rith vocational service bureau
in Washington, D. C.,” he declared,
“is a notable example of the ex
pansion into new fields now being
undertaken by B’nai B’rith. The
bureau in Washington will be at
tached to B’nai B’rith headquarters,
and will offer group vocational
guidance. The subsidy for the pro-
Senator’s Hate
Detroit (WNS)—Rumors that
United States Arthur H. Van-
denburg of Michigan planned
to meet with Captain Fritz
Weidemann, Nazi emissary now
in this country, were branded as
false by the Senator in a state
ment to the Detroit Jewish
Chronicle. Senator Vandenberg
blamed the rumor on the Daily
Worker. He denied ever having
heard of Weidemann or any
other European representative
of Nazism or Fascism. “I hate
Nazism and Fascism precisely as
I hate Communism,” he said.
ject has just been voted. Research
will be continued by the bureau,
which is in constant touch with
125,000 Jewish students in col
lege centers. What is more, the
bureau wil seek, in an advisory ca
pacity, to coordinate other voca
tional research and service in all
parts of the country.”
Another important innovation,
Mr. Bisgyer pointed out, is the
establishment by B’nai B’rith of
a field secretarial system. Instead
of full concentration at headquar
ters, there will be B’nai B’rith of
ficials and representatives through
out the world assisting in program
and other work.
Mr. Bisgyer left Tuesday even
ing for Washington, D. C., new
national headquarters for B’nai
B’rith.
London (WNS)—The Soviet
Government’s policy of keeping ltj
citizens away from all foreign
contacts is expected to lead to the
expulsion of the 111 German-Jew
ish refugee physician* who were
given positions in Soviet institu
tions during the past two year*.
London (WNS)—The indefinite
suppression of the anti-Semitic
paper, Der Stuermer, by the Nazi
propaganda ministry is attribut
able to the growing feeling in the
highest Nazi circles that the gross
er forms of anti-Semitism are
handicapping Germany in the de
velopment of friendly relations
with foreign nations, it is reported
in the London Daily Express and
Dally Herald. The Express de
clares that Foreign Minister von
Neurath protested to Hitler against
Der Stuermer’s obscene and vio
lent nnti-Jewish campaign and
warned that it must be stopped in
Germany’s own interests. The
same paper claims that General
Goering and propaganda Minister
Goebbels have also cautioned Hit
ler to check the excesses of the
anti-Semitic extremists. The Dally
Herald publishes an editorial as
serting the Der Stuermer was sup
pressed because German diplo
matic officials have protested that
they can’t persuade other nation*
that Germany is fit for civilized
intercourse so long as helpless Jews
are kicked around. The Herald
also claims that the paper was
banned after Hitler made a special
trip to Munich to confer with its
publisher, Julius Streicher.
Vogue Border
Costly Error
130,000 Issues
Are Called Back
NEW YORK (WNS)—Discovery
of the word “kike” in an artistic
border used to illustrate an article
in the February issue of Vogue
Magazine caused the publishers
to call back 130,000 copies for re
moval of the offensive word. The
word appeared in print almost too
fine to read in a drawn border for
pictures used to illustrate an article
on "The New Left Wing in New
York Society.” The word appear
ed twice, once in a sentence read
ing “Mr. R. Andrew(’s) ball at
the El Morocco brought out all the
dirty kikes in town” and again 1b
a telegram reading: “PARTY
DARLING LOVE KIKE.” Cecil
Beaton, the artist who drew the
border, explained that the use of
the word kike was an accident and
that "I honestly don’t know how
it all happened.” He said “if there
is any venom in my subconscious it
is not due to anti-Semitism. I
have many friends who are Jews,
great friends, and I am violently
anti-Hitler.” Beaton said he knew
the word kike had something to
do with Jews but didn’t know its
connotation. "Kike is a word I
don’t use,” he said. Conde Nast,
publisher of Vogue said he didn't
know the word kike appeared in
the border and would have dis
carded the entire illustration had
he been advised of it before. “Of
this issue of Vogue 280,000 copies
were printed,” he said, “and 150,-
000 had been shipped before I knew
of these lines. Of the 130,000 not
yet shipped, the pages referred to
have been reprinted with the ob
jectionable lines stricken out." The
offensive word does not appear in
type but in small lettering in a
drawing. The article itself con
tains nothing, Mr. Nast said,
“which could possible have given
the illustrator any motive for the
lettering appearing in the draw
ing."
