KNOW THE RELIGION
OF OTHERS—MELCHETT
Synagogue, Church
Must Draw Closer
LONDON (NCJC)—Addressing
a meeting of the Jewish Historical
Society of England, Lord Melchett,
leading Jewish industrialist of
England, urged that Jews and
Christians study the sacred litera
ture of each other's religions, in
order that they might cooperate
further in the interests of inter
national peace.
No man could fail to gain from
a study of the Talmud, Lord Mel
chett said, adding that it was
quite unknown to Christians. He
was equally convinced that a very
large number of Orthodox Jews,
or semi-Orthodox Jews, should
cooperate further In the interests
of international peace.
In advising Church and Syna
gogue to draw closer together,
Lord Melchett said it was no long
er possible to defend the persecu
tion of Jews on religious or racial
grounds, even though such perse
cutions were actually talcing place
In some countries today.
Jews and Christians have much
In common on the ethical and mor
al plane, the speaker continued,
and the two basic principles com
mon to them were the family and
the home, based on the Command
ment, “Honor ‘hy father and thy
mother," and the commandment
to love God rather than to fear
World’s Fair
Horror Chamber
Now Proposed
NEW YORK (WNS)—The anti-
Nazis of America will seek to
counteract the German pavilion at
the New York World’s Fair of 1939
by a "chamber of horrors” that
would give a true picture of con
temporary Nazi Germany, the
Joint Boycott Council disclosed in
making public a letter to Grover
A. Whalen, president of the
World’s Fair Corporation, asking
him for “an early appointment” to
negotiate for the leasing of space on
the fair grounds. Indicating that
LORD MELCHETT
Him.
Lord Melchett acknowledged
that some Jews and Christians
feared that giving approbation tc
the other faith might lessen their
hold on their own people. He did
not regard that fear as an insur
mountable obstacle to cooperation.
It was good and right to bring
into the Synagogue an understand
ing of Christianity, and into the
Christian Church an understand
ing of the problems and tragedy
of Jewry, the speaker concluded.
Catholics Score Oppression
Of Church In Germany
ST. PAUL MINN. (RNS)—Nazi
persecution of religion was strong
ly protested In a resolution adopted
at a mass meeting of Catholic cler
gy and laity held here. The reso
lution has been sent to Secretary
of State Cordell Hull, who will be
asked to forward it to the German
Ambassador.
Three thousand Catholics, repre
senting organizations from all sec
tions of the Archdiocese of St.
Paul, heard Most Rev. John G.
Murray, Archbishop of St. Paul,
and Joseph Matt, editor of the
Wanderer, score the Nazi regime
for “satanic persecution" of Chris
tians in Germany. Mr. Matt charg
ed the Nazis with officially sanc
tioning teachings which menace
Christian civilization.
“Men who wish to rescue Ger
many must make up their minds
to the fact that step by step all
terms of Christianity are being
perverted," Archbishop Murray
declared. " Hitler, the dictator, is
substituting the marching youth
for the book-loving youth."
“When a state defies the funda
mental laws of justice, decency and
humanity," Mr. Matt said, “and
threatens to destroy principles of
order which have been recognized
for centuries, it can no longer
plead immunity against foreign
criticism."
the Council Is ready to spend up
to $500,000 on the project, the let
ter stated that the Council had de
cided to contract for a site "pre
ferably opposite or nearby the site
of the German pavilion” to coun
teract "the virus of Nazi propa
ganda which has begun to poison
our institutions.” The anti-Nazi
chamber of horrors idea was first
suggested by Mayor La Guardia
last year when he suggested Hitler
ought to be included in such an
exposition.
