brought down fifteen planes over

have been!” “Oh. no,” quaked the
pilot, “I was in them!”
England is far from stymied.
Even her film production goes on
uninterruptedly. Two on the cur
rent schedule are “The Prime Min
ister,” story of Disraeli, and “Yel
low Caesar,” a short biography of
Doochie.
Warners offered to show “Un
derground,” anti-Nazi picture, to
the three hundred German sailors
interned in New Mexico from the
liner Columbus. The idea was to
make available to American news
papers the comments of the sailors
and therefore refute Consul Wiede
mann’s accusation that the U. S.
press is telling only one side of
the war. To date no R.S.V.P. is \
forthcoming.
A most novel premier is planned
for this film. “Underground” will
be previewed underground—in the
Carlsbad Caverns.
Critics are showering raves on
Don Castle (one of Our Boys) for
his wdrk in “Power Dive.” He’s

When “Hitler” walked into a
: studio commissary yesterday, he
, was greeted in icy silence. Then
; boos and hisses rent the air. Poor
fellow was only an actor imper
sonating Adolf in "Man Hunt.”
Red-faced, he rose and said,
“You’re right. . . I’m a dirty, blast
ed so-and-so!" and left the room.

himself and his troupe were footed
by Jack Benny for that trip to Chi
cago, where they played a Greek
War Relief Benefit. Hodwig Ehr
lich, widow of the famous doctor,
received $42,500 for the right to
use his name in the film, “Dr.
Ehrlich’s Magic Bullet.” Michael
Curtiz, puzzled about the appear
ance of one 'of his players, asked,
“How about he is always chew
gumming?” And to a mob of. ex
tras he shouted, “Blease, every
body, separate together in bun
ches!”
A Ripleyan incident occurred in
the research department where
historical details of “Underground”
were being studied. Stumped for
the answer to a technical point,
they called the German consulate.
“Does the Gestapo use women in
its spy work?” they queried.
“What scene is it for?” asked the
consulate office. The inquirer did
n’t know. . . why? “Well,” was the
surprising admission, “if we knew
the scene or page, we could look at
our copy of the script and tell you!
