Campaign Gets Under Way
The Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi
League has repeated its warning
against pro-Axis propaganda dis
seminated through official and
semi-official Spanish agencies,
especially the Falange or Spanish
Fascist party. The League has
urged that the United States
break off relations with the Fran
co regime on the ground that it is
carying on wide-spread anti-
American propaganda through the
Falange.
Figures just released in "Cara
A1 Sol,” official publication of the
Spanish Library of Information in
New York, show a 46 percent in
crease in Falange expenditures in
1941 over those for 1940. Accord
ing to the Anti-Nazi League, the
Falange is particularly active in
Central and South America as a

Jews Will Massacre
Germans, Hitler Warns
ZURICH, (JTA)—Germans and
sympathizers of Naxi-Germany in
Axis countries are warned in the
Voelkischer Beobachter; Hitler’s
chief organ, that should Germany
lose the present war, the entire
European continent will be drown
ed in a flood of blood through
pogoms which will be carried out
by “revengeful Jews."
‘‘Should the Jews ever again
succeed in becoming the rulers of
Europe, then blood will run from
one end of the continent to the
other,” the leading Nazi newspa
per writes. The paper attributes
the present difficulties of the Ger
man armies on the Soviet front to
“Jewish hatred.” The Soviet
scorched earth policy is “a policy
to destroy anything that does not
fall under Jewish yoke,” the arti
cle says.
Algeria Conducts
Census of Jews
VICHY, (JTA)—A census of all
Jews who entered Algeria after
January, 1936, will be conducted
there this month, it was announ

NEWS FROM EUROPE
Greece: Food and Medicine Not for Jews
ISTANBUL, (JTA)—Greek Jews have received very little benefit
from the shipments of food and medicine which were sent to Greece :
with British permission, it is reported here this week.
Axis officials throughout the country see to it that as few supplies
as possible are distributed to Jews. In Salonika, for instance, Jews
received only five percent of the share to which they were entitled on j
the basis of their proportion to the general population.
Belgium: Sale of Property Forbidden
LONDON, (JTA)—Belgian Jews are prohibited to either acquire
or dispose of any property without special permission of the Nazi-
occupation officials, under a new German decree issued in Brussels, the
Belgian government-in-exile learned recently.
At the same time, the Belgian circles report, the Nazis appointed a
board of directors for the recently-formed Association of Belgian
Jews, to which all Jews must belong. Regulations, detail matters, such
as the transfer of Jewish teachers dismissed from Belgian schools to
Jewish schools, which all Jewish children will be compelled to attend.
In times of crisis and emergency
men are selected for service. They
are chosen because of their fitness
for the tasks that have to be per
formed. Experience, capability,
competence, and leadership are
taken into consideration. Men re
spond to the call for service in the
best interests of the national and
war effort.
“It is in this spirit,” Mr. H. A.
Alexander, Pesident of the Jewish
Welfare Fund stated, “I am priv
ileged to announce the selection of
Armand May and J, B. Jacobs, as
general chairmen of the 1942 War
Emergency Campaign of the
Atlanta Jewish Welfare Fund.
Slovakia: Mark Doors
With Yellow Stars
ZURICH, (JTA)—A number of
Rabbis and Jewish leaders were
arrested recently in Slovakia for
alleged “anti-State activities” and
on the charge of “spreading alarm
ing reports,” according to a report
by the Slovak News Agency reach
ing here.
The report also gives details of
I the orrest of Pastor Puskas in
Zvolen, whose internment was an
nounced several days ago. Accord
ing to the Slovak News Agency,
the Calvinist pastor was charged
with baptizing 400 Jews within
three days in order to enable them
to circumvent the anti-Jewish re
strictions. Changes in the existing
legislation which will make the
conversion of Jews illegal are ex-
spected to be introduced in Slova
kia in the next few days.
A decree issued in Slovakia re
cently under the signature of Sano
Mach, the Minister of Interior, or
ders all Jews to mark their doors
with a yellow Mogen David. This
was ordered in order to make it
easier for the Nazi-controlled
Slovak police and secret service
men to distinguish between Jewish
and non-Jewish homes when car
rying out night raids on Jews.
Bulgaria: Hauled Off
Trains By Police
ANKARA, (JTA)—Scores of
Jews were hauled off trains ^run
ning on the main railway lines of
Bulgaria recently and placed un
der arrest for violating the recent
decree that forbids Jews to travel,
it was learned here. The arrests
took place when the Bulgarian po
lice suddenly halted several trains
and examined the papers of all the
travellers.
Anti-Jewish activity in Bulgaria,
which has been greatly intensified
since King Boris openly aligned
Bulgaria with Hitler, continues
unabated, reports from Sofia dis
close. An unnamed Jew has been
arrested for employing a Bulgar
ian who was wearing the uniform
of a major in the Labor Corps.
Despite the government’s cam
paign the Bulgarian people are
evidently reluctant to accept the
anti-Jewish policy.
Senator Hails Heroism of Soldiers
ARMAND MAY
NEWARK, N. J., (JTA)—“The record made by the boys of
Jewish faith in the last World War is unquestionably one of
heroism and bravery,” Senator Warren Barbour declared re
cently at Seder which was held at the Newark, New Jersey,
Y. M. H. A. in honor of 250 soldiers of Jewish origin who
returned home for the Passover Services from many army
camps throughout the United States.
“The record proves that the tributed between four and five
Jewish boy makes a good soldier,”
Senator Barbour further said. By
proportion of population the Jews
should have numbered about S'*
of America’s total armed forces in
World War I. Actually, they con-
percent, or a third above their
normal share. Two factors account
for this: one was the fact that the
draft system operated more effec
tively in the urban areas where
Palestine Women Mobilize
Over 1500 ‘Pats’ (Palestinian Auxiliary Territorial Service) are en
rolled to date. This was announced at the fifth national conference of
working women at Tel-Aviv. The 60 women who are now completing
the course form the nucleus of officers and non-commissioned officers.
Ambulances Presented By Tel-Aviv
A gift of three ambulances was formally presented by Tel-Aviv to
the British Army authorities at a ceremony which occurred at Tel-
Aviv on March 19th, when Israel Rokeah, Mayor of Tel-Aviv, address
ed the gathering. Colonel Wilkins, on behalf of the Royal Army Medi
cal Corps, expressed his warm thanks to the Tel-Aviv municipality.
the proportion of Jews was great
est; the other and most significant
factor was the large number of
Jewish volunteers. The record
show that there were from 30,000
to 40,000 Jewish volunteers, or 18
per cent of the Jewish contingent.
Of the total of 250,000 Jews in the
American service, 190,000 were in
| the army, 25,000 in the havy, 14,—
! 000 in the Marine Corps and 21,-
000 in other branches.
‘‘That magnificent record speaks
for itself but you must be prepared
for the same baseless insinuations,
the myths that always be spring
up at times such as these. The
United States is being flooded by
propaganda anti-democratic and
| anti-semitic. Much of this is false
and cannot be overcome by words
or figures. It is this type of prop
aganda by which the international
gangster dictators used to sow
seeds of disunity. We have only to
think of Poland, France and other
enslaved countries of Europe.”
They were the unanimous choice
for top leadership of this united
community effort, of a special
Committee on Campaign Planning
and Strategy, headed by that vet
eran campaigner, Donald Ober-
dorfer."
All of the past campaign chair
men agreed to serve as associates
and pledged them their whole
hearted cooperation.
Both Mr. May and Mr. Jacobs
served as campaign chairmen in
past years.
Donald Oberdorfer pointed out
this “We were guided in our
choice by the needs of the hour.
The war emergency demanded
that we find mature and wise
leadership loyal to the cause of
Jewish Welfare in this time of
grave crisis. Armand May and J.
B. Jacobs have proven by their
past accomplishments that they
can be depended on to carry us
through to victory”
Mr. Armand May has been ac
tive in the work of the Welfare |
Fund since the day of its organi
zation. His activities extend thru
a variety of Jewish and civic
causes. He is on the Board of the
J. D. C., the American Jewish
Committee, the U. J. A. and many
other important organizations.
Mr. May, when informed of the
top job for which he was drafted,
said, “I realize the gravity of the
situation. I’ll do my best to bring
victory. We need the interest and
active aid of every Jew in At
lanta."
Mr. J. B. Jacobs has been active
in civic and communal life for
many years. He headed the Wel
fare Fund Campaign two years
ago. He has served on its Board
| and Budget committees. His phil
anthropic interests have been nu
merous. He has given generously
of his time and effort in personal
service and of his means to many
worthwhile causes. He has been
active in the U. J. A., on the Na
tional Council of the U. P. A. and
many other organizations.
Atlanta is fortunate and proud
of their leadership. They bring to
the 1942 campaign a loyalty and
positive approach that cannot be
surpassed. Energy, enthusiasm, a
willingness to work are character
istics of all their efforts.
Under the fine leadership of
Messrs. May and Jacobs we feel
certain that the 1942 War Emer
gency Campaign will bring suc
cess and victory.
The Southern Israelite pledges
them its full support and wishes
them God speed.
