LOUIS C. LONG CALLED
TO THE COLORS
By HELEN ZIC.MOND
While politicians wrangle in
Congress and Parliament, our hit
herto silent Charlie gave voice to
the wish of thousands of thinking
citizens: A second front—NOW!
Chaplin spoke over an NBC wire
from Hollywood to a rally in Mad
ison Square Garden, New York.
“Russia is fighting with her back
to the wall,” he pleaded, “and that
wall is the Allies’ strongest de
fense. We cannot afford to lose
Russia . . . What are we waiting
for when she is in so desperate a
plight? . . Coincidentally Elmer
Davis’ recently-issued pamphlet
describes the people of Nazi-occu
pied countries as ready to wel
come and expedite a second front
whereever opened.
Hollywood producers! Here’s
your chance of a life-time! Let’s
have the most colossal, stupendous,
fabulous film ever, depicting the
gargantuan movement of millions
of B. E. F. and A. E. F. crossing
the Channel to Norway, Holland,
Belgium, Denmark. France. An
Invincible armada! Visionary?
Perhaps . . . but a goal to strive
for. An irresistible morale-builder.
And it conceivably would serve a
second purpose—inoculate the
Nazis with some of their own ter
ror germs which they attemned to
spread with “Sieg im Westen”
and others of that bloody ilk.

A little Russian boy becomes
the hit tune of American patriot
ism—Irving Berlin is the verse and
chorus of columnists these days.
He is pouring his life’s breath into
“This Is the Army” . . . and reap
ing millions for the Army Relief
Fund. Besides the New York run,
it will have a road tour, a broad
cast deal calculated to net $10,-
000 a week, a movie version, and
even a Decca album of the tunes.
Berlin’s goal is ten million dollars
for the Fund!
Jack and Harry Warner deserve
a bit of eulogizing. Their purchase
price of a quarter million was
considered magnanimous . . . then
further increased it by agreeing to
split the profits. But later reversed
their decision . . . they would take
NO profits from the film.

Lauding Berlin, Alexander
Woollcoff says, "He can neither
read music nor transcribe it he
can only give birth to it.”

Howie Mayer, lately come out
of Chicago to chief the publicity
department at Columbia, was de
scribing the illness of his child,
“It was measles,” he said, “Ger
man measles. THAT should hap
pen to a Mayer!”

Did-you-knotes:
That Hitler mentioned Anne
j Nichols’ “Abie’s Irish Rose” in
| his "Mein Kampf”? She treasures
j his venomous words as proof of
the love and tolerance of her play.
That Irving Berlin’s “Easter
Parade” sold 30,000,000 copies?
Makes its first film appearance in
[“Holiday Inn.”
That piano-playing Harry Ros
enthal is very near F. D. R. in the
i National Encyclopedia of Biogra
phies?
That Gertrude Niessen, singer,
| was born on the "high C’s”?
That that speech in '“Mrs. Mini
ver”—This is a war of the people,
of all the people, etc.”—was writ
ten by the director, William Wy
ler?
