Hong Kong's Jewish community i-
about a century old. and here too a
member of the Sassoon family was
the first J ewish settler. Most of the
cit\'s Jews are, as in Shanghai, from
the Middle Fast. Ihe Sephardic com
munity i- well-organized, boasting a
number of exquisitely built svna

Saul \bdullah, born in Baghdad
and brother-in-law of David Sassoon,
founder of the business establishment
“Sassoon. Sons & Partners." resided
in Hong Kong the greater part of bi-
life. and won for himself the reputa
tion of being a gifted Hebrew scholar
and writer. When a few years back.
Hebrew scholars were having dilli-
culties making out the meanings of
certain newly-diseoyered poems of
the Middle Ages, \hdullah. with his
knowledge of the \rabie and other
Semitic languages, came to tin* fore
with the correct answers. Ihe fa

so years ago often invited this Hong
Kong Jewish literateur to write for
them.
Jacob Sapir. the traveler, found a
Jewish community in Singapore in
the UlhO’s. Originally from Baghdad
and Calcutta, these Jews had suc
ceeded in their undertakings in grow
ing Singa|H>re. and had at the same
time remained loyal and true to their
faith. They resided in spacious, tree-
surrounded mansions and were re
-peeled by the entire |M>pulace. There
are two large synagogues in Singa
pore. one in which the Sephardim and
\shkena/im hold joint services. \
modern Talmud-Torah e\i-|s there,
too.
Various travelers have reported
-mailer and out-of-the-way communi
ties tin some places there are only a
few families i in Burma, Rangoon.
Filipinang. Mandalay, latnnu. brum,
etc., etc. Some of these Jews were re-
ported to be Cochin Jews (from In
dia', but this was never verified.
In Manila, years back. Jews felt
that it was expedient to hide their
faith, and therefore many became
Marannos like their Spanish ances
tors in the fifteenth century. It was
not until fairly recently that this
practice was abandoned and a Phi'ip
pine Jewish settlement formed.
What turn events in the bar Fast
will take is a highly moot question.
But that the Jewish populace in the
area will suffer seems a grim, but
definite, certainty.
