pluralism, a theory which is still in
need of development and research.
\ oices in favor of this new demo
cratic nationalism which is the only
basis for any practical international
order, are heard from all quarters.
Madam Chiang Kai-Shek has applied
this concept to China. Various Chris
tian denominations are equally awak
ening to it.
\\ hat may be the effect of the ten
dency towards cultural pluralism or
liberal nationalism on Jewish life
throughout the world?
Beginning with the nineteenth cen
tury. Jewish nationalism, hitherto pri
marily religious, acquired several new
forms in addition to retaining its re
ligious phase. It emerged in the multi
national states, such as Austria-Hun
gary and tin* Hussian Kmpire, in the
same way as the national liberation
movements of all the submerged na
tionalities in those regions. Too often
is Jewish nationalism presented as a
Zionist whim or a relic of the reli
gion- past. Frequently the non-Zionist
and anti-Zionist forms of Jewish na-
tionalisin. such as ^ iddishist secular
ism and Soviet Jewish nationalism,
are overlooked. Likewise, the fact of
the official definition of Jews as a na-
tionality in the Soviet l nion. Kastern
KunqM* and Palestine i- ignored.
Thus far there has been no e\ idence
dial the Jews in the Soviet I nion are
anxious to give up their legal status of
a Jewish nationality, although thev
are free to do so. There is no question
as to what group definition is pre
ferred by the Jews in Palestine; nor
i- there any reason to expect that the
Jews in Hast F.uropean countries who
have chosen to define themselves a- a
national minority, will be seeking a
different status, particularly under the
exacted new liberal conditions. I heir
representatives in exile beginning with
the Bund and ending with Agudath
Israel insi-t on such a national defini
tion, though their terminology may
varv. The Bundists do not like the
term “minority rights and demand
instead national-cultural autonomy.
Differences based on mere terminol-
ogv do not alter the case.
Am realistic consideration of the
Jewish future has to be based on these
facts. In other words, many Ameri
can Jews while insisting on the right
to consider themselves merely Ameri
cans of Jewish persuasion, and French
Jews who term themselves solely
Frenchmen of the Mosaic faith, ought
to understand that such definitions ap-
P ! > only to themselves and cannot lie
forced upon other Jews without vio
lating the principle of -elf-determina
tion. Similarly, so-called nationalist
Jews should also Ik* reasonable enough
to grant to any individual Jew any-
