Too often is Jewish nationalism presented as a Zionist whim or a relic of the reli gion- past. Frequently the non-Zionist and anti-Zionist forms of Jewish na- tionalisin. such as ^ iddishist secular ism and Soviet Jewish nationalism, are overlooked. Likewise, the fact of the official definition of Jews as a na- tionality in the Soviet l nion. Kastern KunqM* and Palestine i- ignored. Thus far there has been no e\ idence dial the Jews in the Soviet I nion are anxious to give up their legal status of a Jewish nationality, although thev are free to do so. There is no question as to what group definition is pre ferred by the Jews in Palestine; nor i- there any reason to expect that the Jews in Hast F.uropean countries who have chosen to define themselves a- a national minority, will be seeking a different status, particularly under the exacted new liberal conditions.
