Dem orations In Vichy Against
Deportation of Jewish People
ZURICH, (JTA)—Mass-demonstrations protesting the deportation
of Jews from unoccupied France to Nazi-held territories in Eastern
Europe broke out recently in Vichy, Marseilles, Nice, and several
other cities in the unoccupied part of France as police led through the
streets of these cities hundreds of Jews who were rounded up for
transportation to the Nazi-occupied zone.
Huge crowds of Frenchmen,
especially students, participated
in these demonstrations, according
to information reaching here from
Vichy. The students, disregarding
possible penalties, wore yellow
Mogen Dovid inside of which un
complimentary slogans ridiculing
the Vichy regime were inscribed.
Many of them shouted: “The trait
or Fernand de Brinon has a Jew
ish wife” and ‘‘the French repre
sentative in Paris has worked for
years for Jewish bankers.”
The police were forced to use
clubs to disperse the demonstra
tors, especially in Marseilles
where crowds displayed open in
dignation. The property of the de
ported Jews is being immediately
sold at auction by the Vichy auth
orities with the proceeds going to
the State.
U. S. Airmen Visit
Jewish Colony
In Palestine
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Sixty
American airmen serving with the
United States forces in the Middle
East visited the colony of Ein
Hashofet (Judge’s Well) which is
named after the late Justice Louis
D. Brandeis. They were warmly
received by the settlers.
Gable Swell Guy,
Says Roommate
PITTSBURG, (JTA)—“He’s a
swell guy, and I don’t blame any
girl for falling for him,” writes
Corporal Hyman Grossman, 25,
about his new room-mate at the
Air Force Officers’ Training
School in Miami Beach. “Gosh,
thousands of women gather under
the window every morning just to
see him march to breakfast. But
he’s regular.
“You know, when he heard
about us Grossmans having six
brothers in the army, he actually
asked for a picture. Imagine, HE
wanted OUR pictures.”
Lots of people want to see the
Grossman family picture—families
of six soldiers are somewhat rare,
but when an actor asks for a pic
ture, it does seem strange.

Raids Conducted Throughout
Southern France
It is reported that raids have
been conducted in every city in
Southern France. Jews, including
even those who enlisted in the
French Army in 1939 soon after
the war broke out, are being ar
rested in their homes, in cafes, in
restaurants and wherever the po
lice can lay their hands upon them.
Street cars and busses are being
stopped to allow the police to
search for Jews among the pas
sengers, while travelers on trains
must identify themselves in order
to avoid being arrested as Jews. *
An eye-witness story published
in the Zuricher Volksrecht de
scribing the raids on Jews in Mar
seilles says that all arrested Jews
are being herded into freight cars
and sent to unknown destinations.
At the same time, a report from
Paris here predicts that in addi
tion to the deportation of Jews
who entered France since 1933, the
deportation of native-born Jews
from France wil^-start soon.

The sound of the Ram’s Horn on the New
Year is a call to hope and faith for every lew.
On this New Year of 5703, the blast of the
Shofar rises amid the groans of countless Jews
enslaved and the tumult of the worldwide
battle for freedom. It summons each American
Jew to renew and strengthen his devotion to
the cause of survival and rescue of the Jewish
people, * which is an integral part of the
struggle for democracy. Through the United
Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs
and Palestine we are called upon to give the
fullest measure of support to the Joint Dis
tribution Committee, United Palestine Appeal
and National Refugee Service, which are hold
ing the vital sectors in this worldwide front.
New Year Strengthens
Faith In Victory-
Judge Levinthal
Washington, D. C.:—Declaring
that the dawn of the new year
5703 “instills in us renewed faith
in the triumph of the cause of the
United Nations,” Judge Louis E.
Levinthal, president of the Zionist
Organization of America, in a Rosh
Hashanah message to American
Zionists, voiced the conviction that
the “freedoms we Americans en
joy, shall become the inalienable
rights of all men everywhere and
that the Jewish people shall find
permanent redemption in the re
establishment of Palestine as a
Jewish Commonwealth.”
The text of Judge Levinthal’s
Rosh Hashanah message follows:
"The Jewish year 5703, we fer
vently pray, shall usher in a new
era of hope and courage for all
mankind. America’s entrance into
the war has strengthened and ex
tended the anti-Axis front, both
here and abroad, and has rallied
all freedom-loving peoples in the
fight against their common enemy.
The Jewish people, first in human
history to proclaim the concept
of liberty and first to bear the
brunt of the modern tyrant’s as
sault, is heartened by the realiza
tion that the enlightened forces of
the world are now determined, at
whatever cost, to eradicate the
scourge which threatened to over
whelm humanity.
“Led by our inspired and inspir
ing leader, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt, all the United Nations
have joined in an all-out effort to
defend freedom and justice, and
to crush the attempt by the Azis
to plunge the world into darkness.
