U. S. Official Says Naturalized Americans
Will Bear Great Share In Licking Hitler
NEW YORK, (JTA)—The U. 8. Government will send special repre
sentatives to various theatres of war to confer clticenship on soldiers
in the American armed forces who were born in other countries, re
gardless of their nationality or race. It was announced by Earl G.
Harrison, Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization.
Speaking at a dinner in the Roosevelt Hotel which marked the tenth
anniversary of the Neue Volkszeltung, oldest anti-Nazi publication in
the German language in this country. Mr- Harrison said “a substantial
share in the 'inevitable defeat’ of Nazism and Fascism will be borne by
Americans born in the countries where once those freedom-crushing
forces appeared to flourish.” He added that the concept of the old
“melting pot” here has been scrapped through gradual realization of
its fallacies. The principal speakers at the dinner included Mrs. Roose
velt and Constantine Poules, chief of the foreign language press sec
tion of the Office of War Information.

of America, declared that “today the entire world faces the same
challenge as that which was met by a small group of Maccabeans
more than 2,000 years ago against overwhelming odds to rescue their
nation from oppression."
