Senate Urges Government
To Feed People Of Europe
WASHINGTON (JTA)—The United States Senate this week unani
mously passed a resolution urging the State Department to cooperate
with the governments of Britain, Sweden and Switzerland to send
food now to the hungry people in occupied Europe.
The measure was unanimously
approved by the Foreign Rela
tions Committee in December.
Open hearings on the resolution,
introduced by Senators Taft and
Gillette, were held in November
before a special subcommittee
headed by Senator Thomas, of
Utah. Herbert Hoover was one of J
the witnesses.
Following passage of the reso
lution, Acting Secretary of State
Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., told a
successful conclusion at the earl
iest possible moment. “We, there
fore, have to consider any plan
for relief in the light of whether
it would help the enemy,” he said.

to be the bringing of the war to a

by the Sunday Dispatch. The
newspaper adds that Dr. Sauer-

for humanity to master technical

Anti-Semitism Is Hitler Propaganda- F.D.R,
“Whoever Condones Or Participates In Anti-
Semitism Plays Hitler’s Game,” Says President
NEW YORK (JTA)—Anti-Semitism was branded as Hitler propa
ganda in-a message to the National Conference to Combat Anti-Se
mitism, which was called by the American Jewish Congress. In his
message which was addressed to Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, the President
stated that “whoever condones or participates in anti-Semitism plays
Hitler’s game.”
10,000 To Immigrate
To Palestine
NEW YORK (JTA)—On the
basis of immigration certificates
that have been distributed by the
Jewish Agency for Palestine and
from reports of its representatives
in Lisbon, Istanbul and Teheran,
some 10,000 Jews may be expected
to enter the country by June, 1944,
Dr. James G. Heller, national
chairman of the United Palestine
Appeal, announces. They include
500 who had been interned at
Ferramonti, Italy; 150 Rumanian
Jewish refugees now in Cyprus;
600 from Turkey; 420 Bokharian
Jews now in Teheran and 1,200
Yemenite Jews. The Joint Dis
tribution Committee has been
making available the funds for
the transportation of such refugees
while the United Palestine Appeal
agencies have provided for their
integration into the economy of
Palestine.
Dr. Heller also announced that
over 5,000 Jews have entered Pal
estine in the four months ending
January 31, on the basis of immi
gration certificates issued by the
Jewish Agency for Palestine. These
included 3,000 Jews from Yemen
and Turkey and 2,000 from Nazi-
occupied countries. The announce
ment emphasized that the immi
grants are arriving in a state of
destitution. Large sums are re
quired for their housing and ac
comodation.
At the opening session of the
conference, Mayor Fiorello Lr. Gu-
ardia declared that there was no
organized anti-Semitism in New
York City and criticized certain
newspapers which he charged
were sensationalizing the situa
tion. He defended his failure to
remove Patrolman John Drew, who
has been accused of participation
in anti-Jewish organizations, and
asserted that there was no anti-
Semitism in the New York police
department. The mayor’s refusal
to act in the Drew case was crit
icized by Rabbi Wise.
The text of the President's let
ter reads:
“The attempt by Adolf Hitler
and the Nazi party to rule Ger
many, to rule Europe and therf
to rule the Western World, was
based on two brutal devices: or
ganized terror and organized an
ti-Semitism. Terror put Hitler
in power and kfcpt him there. An
ti-Semitism was the terror’s coun
terpart in propaganda. In the

name of the self-styled master
race, Hitler robbed, first his own
people, then the people of Europe
and tomorrow, by his own boast
would have robbed the world. In
the past months we have defeated
Hitler’s plan for world conquest.
We have recovered some of his
stolen gains and in the months to
come we shall recover more, and
we shall meet and defeat Hitler
on his own ground.
“Some of the sources of anti-
Semitism in this country were
created to serve Hitler’s purpose.
Let every American look to his
own mind and actions so that
while we defeat Hitler’s armies
we also defeat his poisonous prop
aganda. Whoever condones or
participates in anti-Semitism
plays Hitler’s game. There is no
place in the lives or thoughts of
true Americans for anti-Semit
ism.”
Associate Suprtme Court Jus
tice Frank Murphy echoed the
President’s charge about instiga
tion of anti-Semitism in the Unit
ed States in communications in
connection with the National Con
ference. Justice Murphy asserted
that great sums and extensive ef
forts had been expended by Nazi
representatives in this country,
acting directly or indirectly, to
spread religious intolerance here.

ish military organization, this
week announced that it is respon

cently committed in Palestine, in
cluding the bombing of Govern

the assassination of two police of
ficers in Haifa.
The announcement was made in
the form of a letter delivered to
the editorial offices of Palestine,
newspapers by an anonymous
messenger. The letter, which was
signed by the “Commander-in-
Chief of the Irgun,’’ stated: “We
started a battle for opening the
gates of Palestine to the masses
of persecuted Jews of Europe, and
not for the insulting gesture of
900 immigration certificates which
the Palestine Government has now
granted." The letter also warns
(he editors of the newspapers not
to oppose the policy of the Irgun.
In a statement sharply con
demning the terrorists, the execu

impose a regime of terror. These
terrorists,” the statement contin
