Who's Who On the Stage, Screen and Radio
(Continued from page 15)
was the case from the very begin
ning with Information Please. Clif
ton Fadiman, the erudite master of
ceremonies, was teamed in 1938
with Franklin P. Adams and Os
car Levant, making three Jews of
a combination of five. Levant has
since left the program, what with
a wealth of wagging, bookkeeping,
movie acting and concert piano
playing to do, but Fadiman and
Adams still remain.
While the program is essential
ly the same as when it began nine
years ago, it retains its popularity
because of its perennial bubbling
wit, supplied principally by Adams.
Fadiman skillfully guides the
questioning along, and the pace is
even and swift. Adams’ recollec
tion of poetry and old songs never
fails to astound. He has become so
valuable to the program that it is
rumored he receives $800 for a
single half-hour participation.
Winchell is another phenomenon
of the air who, like Adams, first
made his distinguished mark in the
press. But Winchell is a powerful
figure — has been called one of the
two most powerful columnists in
the world. A plug by him on the
ladio can many any unknown book
a best seller; a blast against ap
peasers and fascists brings investi
gations and probes; he has been a
constant thorn in the side of dema
gogues of the Bilbo - Rankin type.
He spurred the trials of Christian
Fronters, subversive agents and
anti-Semites by his public accusa
tions.
The ‘ education” of Walter Win
chell has been one of the amazing
developments in radio. When he
first went on the air, his immediate
concern was disclosing impending
births or divorces; he delighted in
nothing so much as scooping his
rivals on Hollywood or Broadway
chit-chat. Gradually, however, he
came to see that his tremendous
audience, listed in the millions,
carried a responsibility far greater
than that of disseminating idle gos
sip. The turning point of his career
came in his championing of the
late President Roosevelt, and from
that stemmed his unmitigating
warfare against the enemies of de
mocracy.

Winchell was originally a hoofer
on the stage, which is a far cry
from becoming a radioracle, to use
one of his expressions. Lately he
has taken up the cudgels against
Franco and Argentina and if this
country ever takes drastic action
against these inheritors of Hitler’s
mantle, it will be largely due to
Winchell and his unflagging war
on the radio.
Gabriel Heatter is a poor con
trast. Standing by himself, he com
mands a large audience, as may
be envisaged by a three-year con-
