UNITED JEWISH APPEAL
Southern Socials
For the first time in memory of the present editor at
least, The Southern Israelite goes to press without its
column of “all-essential” socials. This we understand is
the “unpardonable” newspaper error.
There is a reason. Somewhere between the editor’s
pencil* and the printer’s Linotype the copy was irre
trievably lost—along with three other stories. It just
vanished. A saboteur? Vandals? Carelessness? Accident?
Anyway, we apologize to our readers and to those
cooperative individuals who so kindly gave us the infor
mation. We hope both groups understand the omission.

UNITED JEWISH APPEAL
$ 170. 000.000 MUST BE RAISED IN 1947
Rehabilitation and reconstruction, theme of the UJA’s drive for $170,000,0041, are here
dramatically illustrated in posters submitted to the UJA for the current campaign use.
The poster pleading to end the homelessness of Europe’s Jewish survivors, was drawn
by Yosef Taubmann, a Polish refugee who entered Palestine in 1938. The drawing at
the right was submitted by Julian Frankfort, 42-ycar-old engineer, who took first and
third prizes among the DP artists. The illustrations portray the starkness of the need
for which several hundred Atlanta workers arc canvassing their community for the
1947 goal of the Atlanta Jewish Welfare Fund Campaign.

QUESTION: What are the dif
ferent names riven to the "Shav-
uos" festival (ircciiring M*v 25-26
this year)?
ANSWER: The name "Shavuos’’
which is the Hebrew equivalent
for th title "Feast of Weeks’’ is
applied because in the Bible the
holiday Is set by counting seven
whole weeks from Passover (Dent.
16:9). For a somewhat similar
reason It was also given the name
“Pentecast" by the Greek Jews,
which implies the fact that the
holiday occurs on the fiftieth day
after the Passover. (Lev. 23-15).
Besides referring to it as the
“Fens', of Works" the B'ble has
FROZEN!
This is what happens to
real estate when the
title is defective—when
no purchaser will buy
and no lender will
lend, because of clouds
on (he title.
