PANORAMA
The Fourth of July
If any delegate to the Zionist
convention chances to read this,
may I offer a suggestion to him?
The Zionist convention will meet
on July 4th and I ask him to rise
after Dr. Silver has pounded his
gavel and called the convention
to order and read the Declaration
of Independence to the assembled
delegates.
It is the American thing to do.
The Declaration of Independence
is the charter of our American
freedom. And it is the Zionist
thing to do, for the Declaration
of Independence is a great Zion
ist document.
Hear! hear! you say. What has
the Declaration of Independence
got to do with Zionism?
In answer to that, all I say is
read it and see for yourself.
What are the evil things which
tiie Declaration of Independence
charges against England? Let me
quote one of the indictments and
I shall not change a sylable.
He (the king) has endeavored
to prevent the population of these
states: for that purpose obstruct
ing the laws of naturaization of
foreigners, refusing to pass others
to encourage their migration
hither, and raising the conditions
of new appropriations of land."
That is word for word from the
Declaration of Independence. The
Americans in 1776 went to war
charging the British with trying
to White Paper" prospective set
tlers from coming to America and
trying also to make it difficult
for them to acquire land.
The same old tricks, you see,
There are many other indictments
brought against England in the
Declaration of Independence, but
it is probably correct to say that
this \Yas the most important.
There are many historians who
maintain that the thing which
caused the most irritation in
America was England's effort to
prevent American settlement be
yond the Alleghenies. The reason
England gave for this edict against
land acquisition was that settle
ment would lead to trouble with
the Indians. But the real reason
for this British bar on land acqui
sition in early America was that
she was afraid, once the colonists
began to wander off the eastern
seaboard, they would declare the
region independent of Britain. The
British knew that even on the
eastern coast, they were not too
welcome.
But let us take a look at this
Declaration of Independence
By DAVID SCHWARTZ
again. What other things^ are
charged against Britain?
“He has kept among us in times
of peace, standing armies without
tlie consent of our legislature.”
Certainly there is a parallel
here. Certainly, the more than
100.000 troops which England has
in Palestine are not there with
the assent of the people of Pales
tine. Certainly England even for
its own good could better put these
troops to work raising wheat at
home, so she would not have to
launch an annual four billion dol
lar “United British Appeal" in
America.
Let me quote some more from
the Declaration:
“He has refused his assent to
laws the most wholesome and
necessary for the public good.”
A thousand evidences could show
how this charge applies today in
Palestine, but any one need be
cited here. England is trying to
prevent the realization of the
Lowdermilk plan, which the most
reputable American engineers say
will increase the arable land of
Palestine fully seven times.
Again, back to the Declaration:
"He has affected to render the
military independent of and su
perior to the civil power.”
Even the English would not deny
that this is true of their rule in
Palestine today.
I could cite more parallels—but
it is all there to see for yourself.
On July 4th, 1776, in a grim
atmosphere, while the German
mercenaries whom England had
hired seemed to have everything in
their favor, wresting position af
ter position from Washington, the
American delegation at Philadel
phia, solemnly pledged “their
lives, their fortunes and their sa
cred honor” to drive the enemy
out by signing this Declaration
of Independence.

many other reasons have been
added to give meaning and pur
pose to the rite which seems to
be both the oldest and the most
widely performed surgical oper
ation known. Writers like Philo,
Josephus and Saadta have found
in this ritual a hygienic motive.
This is borne out by late medi
cal analysis. The overhanging
foreskin is a breeding place for
germs which often lead to in
fection. Medical investigation
has shown that a person who is
not circumcized is subject to a
malady termed Phimosis (ina
bility to withdraw the foreskin
whenever necessary.) This con
dition leads to many other
troubles. In extreme cases gan
grene and ulceration havs been
traced to this difficulty.
Maimonides has seen in this
custom a prevention of exces
sive lust. Some have seen in
Circumcision a sacrificial sym
bol. Rosensweig was so im
pressed w ith the practice that he
recommended in 1878 that the
entire Prussian army be cir
cumcized. The Bible itself has
many a time clad the ritual with
a deep spiritual significance. For
example the statement in Deu
teronomy (X, 16) "Circumcize
the foreskin of your heart" dis
plays the act of circumcision
not only as the cleansing of the
body but as a symbol of the
cleansing of the soul.
FOREIGN NEWS LETTER
London Letter-Bomb Goes Boom!
NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL
By PAUL S. GREEN
London.
English newspaper readers
should be forgiven for being con
vinced that New York City has be
come the “rebel capital” of the
Jewish state-to-be. They get this
impression from newspaper articles
and columns in the daily press
which make a point of stressing
the role of “New York Jews” in
promoting war with Britain and
preventing His Majesty’s peace-
loving government from settling
the vexing Palestine problem.
The feeling of the average Eng
lishman was aptly summed up by
Foreign Minister Bevin in his
recent speech at the annual Labor
Party convention when he ex
claimed that he could not cope
with the Zionists because their
policy was being run from New
j York.
The English man-in-the-street
has now perfected a stereo type
of the “New York Jew." He is a
man like Ben Hecht and Walter
Winchell who put their feet on
desks in luxurious Park Avenue
penthouses and decide on the lat
est propaganda line against the
British. “New York Jews” meet
1 every night in masM rallies at
| Madison Square Garden to con-
I tribute hundreds of thousands of
j I dollars to the * “terrorists.” and

“New York Jews” stuff their
pockets with money made by buy
ing unseaworthy ships which they
pack with unwilling refugees sent
off to be rescued by the heroic
British Navy. "New York Jews”
pull the strings, and their puppets
in Palestine throw 1 bombs to blow
up helpless British soldiers trying
to keep order in a troubled land.
The sort of article that illus
trates perfectly how this stereo
type is formed was carried re
cently In Lord Beaverbrook's mass-
circulation London “Evening Stan
dard.” It was written by Evelyn
Webber, the same reporter who
caused such a furor by her inter
view with Ben Hecht. which he
later disavowed. The readline, add
ed by the London editors, pro
claimed: “How New 1 York Jews
Run Their ‘War' With Britain.”
The carelessness with which
Miss Webber handles the facts
can be gauged by her estimate
that “in ffie largest Jewish city in
the world,” Jews number 56 1-2
per cent of the population. The
1947 World Almanac lists the fig
ure as 28.08 per cent.
Our reporter, who walked New
York's streets to question hun
dreds of people in a few 1 days, con
cluded that the average New York
Jew openly applauds terrorism.
Whenever she asked the question,
"What do you think of Palestine?”
she was answered, “that’s just too
bad.” All were agreed she reports,
that “the terrorism is Britain’s.”
Miss Webber stresses the role
played by the Yiddish press in
forming public opinion. She lists
“the four powerful dailies, plus
large groups of weekly and month
ly publications, ranging from the
Brooklyn (Examiner) to semi-mil
itary important monthlies.” What
these “semi-military” monthlies
might be sjae does not say.
"Editorially” she says, “their
policy follows the Zionist line.”
This will come as a great surprise
to the Morning Fhieheit, the Com
munist daily, and the other leftist
and non-Zion publications. She
goes on to declare that they all
"mildly” favor Haganah, which
she describes as “trying to demol
ish British military installations
in Palestine in order to quicken
illegal immigration.
But it is the Irgun and the
American ‘ League for a Free Pal
estine, she insists, that receives
the editorial approval of all the
Jewish press. Thus she does her
bit in the campaign to link the
entire Zionist movement with the
extremist groups.

CAMP DANIEL MORGAN
Camp Daniel Morgan got off
to a fine start despite the coJd and
the rain which invaded camp
shortly after the arrival of the
campers. Activities during this pe
riod centered around the tents,
craft shop and dining hall. With
the brightening of the sun on
Monday campers got their first
crack at the lake and splashed
about, swimmers doing their bit
in the deeper water and the be
ginners getting their first instruc
tion from Aquatic Director, Mel
vin Siskind.
The Craft Shop suppied much
of the interest and most campers
already have some projects started
and some few have already fin
ished and have started on their
second.
