The convention also resolved to
urge the United Nations Commit

Palestine cannot be divorced from
the problem of Europe's homeless

“the use of violence in Palestine

The convention expressed "pro

How to Outsmar'
a River
Maybe you read about the flood
in Litchfield County. It never both
ered our town—even though the
river’s only half a mile away.
Seven years ago. the farmers
around here got together—and put
in a set o£ flood controls, to regu
late high water, and protect our
fields. It took a pack of labor and
co-operation, but it worked.
We were talking about R in
Andy’s Garden Tavern, over a
friendly glass of beer; and A.»dy
was saying how it was like the
brewing industry’s Self-Regulation,
as he caHed it. The brewers work
with beer retailers to help them
maintain decent, clean taverns.
Brewers don’t want beer sold in
the other kind. This system of
moral suasion and self-control
works mighty well, too, Andy says.
From where I sit, oo-oporafive
regulation is the best way of get
ting sure results—whether it’s
keeping our wheat fields healthy,
or keeping our taverns neat and
clean and law-abiding.
