European operations, were received
here by American Ambassador

■ PORT DE BOUC, France, (JTA)
—Forty-five hundred Jewish refu
gees, jammed into the holds and
wire cages of three British prison
ships this week defied their cap-
tors’ efforts to disembark them.
Weary and ill after almost three
weeks at sea, except for the few
hours break while they were being
transshipped in Haifa, the depor
tees declined with thanks French
offers of hospitality and told an
official delegation that they would
not be taken off the ships alive.
They shouted their defiance in the
face of armed British paratroopers
who patrolled the decks of the
floating concentration camps.
Today’s drama began at 7:30 A.
M., when the American-built Ca
nadian Liberty ship Runnymede
Park was sighted entering the
roadstead here. A French corvette
carrying sanitation officials im
mediately put out to inspect the
transport, while hundreds of offi
cials, Jewish representatives and
thousands of onlookers—most of
them Zionists from Marseilles—
surged around the deck area. An
other corvette, outfitted with loud
speakers, and carrying a ten-man
French welcoming delegation, also
put out.
Several small boats, some carry
ing newspapermen and others rep
resentatives of the Haganah, im
mediately set out for the ^hips, but
were chased back to shore by
French naval launches. One Ha
ganah ship equlped with loud
speakers succeeded in running the
blockade, however, and circled the
Runnymede Park and the Ocean
Vigor and Emipre Rival, which
wereanchored outside the port
about 15 miles from shore. The
ship circled the deportation ves
sels and repeatedly urged the refu
gees to refuse to disembark. From
the transports whose decks were
lined with a solid wall of human
flesh came shouts in Yiddish: “We
will not leave. We will stay here.
We would rather starve to death
here than to land anywhere but
Palestine.” \
The French delegation was
greeted in similar fashion when it
boarded the Runnymede Park. At
the request of the British colonel
in command, one of the delegation
began to read the official French
declaration, offering'the refugees
care and shelter in Fiance. He
was repeatedly interrupted by
shouts of "Come down to the hold,
see how we are living.”
When the declaration had been
read, the delegation asked to be
taken down to the hold, to which
the British reluctantly agreed.
There were two main holds, fore
and aft. In the first were 800 peo
ple jammed together in stinking
dam pair. Women, children and
aged persons appeared wan and
ill. Here the declaration was read
again, and again the refugees in
terrupted, stating that they did
not wish to land in France, al
though they appreciated the gov
ernment's hospitality. When one
refugee asked whether the French
would use force to remove them
from the ship, the prefect who
headed the delegation replied only

UNSCOP Members Clash Over Visiting DP's
GENEVA (JTA i—Members of the UN Special Committee on
Palestine, who began meeting here this week in the headquarters of
the Uni ed Nations clashed almost immediately on the question of
visiting the camps for displaced Jews,
Opposing the proposal to visit the DP camps in Germany was
the representative of India who did not seek to cloak his pro-Arab
attitude during the hearings of UNSCOP in Palestine. The meetings
of the committee are held here in camera.
The League of Red Cross Societies here received a cabled appeal
from the Red Mogen Dovid in Palestine, asking help for the Exodus
1947 refugees. Grave concern is expressed here over the selection of
Port du Bouc, since it is feared it may indicate that the deportees
may be placed in camps in the areas which were formerly occupied
by Interned Spanish republicans.

the government described as "un

It is understood that the expul

role played by both men in the
current Jewish community election
campaign. Both Nathan and Jam
bor were active against assimila-
tionist forces in the community.

Declaring that "Crossfire,” the
courageous new RKO film, soon
to be released in Atlanta, struck a
compelling blow against bigotry in
general and anti-Semitism in par
ticular, Alexander F. Miller, South
eastern Regional Director of the
Anti - Defamation League, dis
agreed sharply with Arnold Levin,
nationally syndicated columnist.
Levin, in his column “Heard in
the Lobbies" which appeared in the
SOUTHERN ISRAELITE last
week, took pains to blast "Cross
fire" as a cheap, un-eonvincing
thriller and "one is more Hkely to
remember the anti-Semitic state-

of its crew and passengers, and
the deportation of the passengers
to France.
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, chairman
of the Emergency Council, con
demned the "poHey of talk and
delay of our own government” and
asked "is there no Human policy
for our people?” Speaking of the
Exodus incident, he said
meats by its villian than the anti-
Semitic utterances by the other
players.”
"It is unfortunate,” Miller stated,
“that a great many people will be
influenced by Levin’s unfair and
subjective analysis of a moving
picture which blazes a new path
in dealing with the knotty prob
lems of prejudice. Certainly a col
umnist has a grave responsibility
and should not airily condemn a
picture because the whim strikes
him or his ulcers are acting up.”
Miller pointed out that he was
one of a group of six representing
all faiths which previewed "Cross-
“Bevin’s navy” attacked the ship
and "Bevin’s henchmen” boarded
her. Referring to the 15-year-old
orphan kiHed during the battle
on the refugee ship, he said: "Hit
ler killed his father and mother,
Bevin killed hi*n.”
Praising the American Jews who
manned the Haganah vessel, he
called on "tens of thousands of
American boys to follow their ex
ample.” He said that he would like
to "assure Bevin" that "former
GI’s from Guadalcanal and Nor
mandy will transport our people
fire” recently. Hie entire group
agreed that the picture itself was
a taut excellently produced and
exciting melodrama and that Ms
message was put forth extremely
well. Miller reported that similar
rave notices were received from all
over the country. Motion picture
reviewers and community repre
sentatives alike joined in praising
the picture.
"However," MMler added, “we in
ADL did not trust our own judg
ment or even that of reviewers be
fore endorsing this motion pic
ture. With the cooperaton of
Professor Lewis Rath, Director of
Research at the New York Uni
versity School of Education, an
outstanding evaluation expert with
a national reputation, we had this
picture pre-tested in three large
cities representing different areas
of the United States. Both adults
and high school children of var
ious faiths were tested. Hie re
sults went far beyond our expecta
tions. It was not only an over
whelming endorsement of this kind
of Him but also an overwhelming
majority identified themselves
with the heroes and against the
villian. This, of course, is in di
rect contradiction to Mr. Levin’s
statement. He could easily have
ascertained the true facts by in
vesting in a five cent telephone call
to the nearest ADL office.”
