McGiU who has done so much to
“further American ideals.” In re
ply to Richman, McGill said, "All
of us have a job to do. With your
help and help like you we can go
ahead and oppose any organiza
tion or any individual who sup
ports un-American ideals.”
Commander Richman's talk to
members and wives explained the
policy of the organization. He
told of the dangers to national se
curity.
“In the first world war we won
the war. but we lost the peace,” he
stated. “I believe there are three
reasons—isolationism, because we
thought we were geographically se
cure, League of Nations, and
American unpreparedness.” — I
He declared that today we have!
developed a new concept of secur- j
ity based upon the atomic bomb,
we are developing a spirit of iso-1
lationism, and because of our op- j
position to military training and J
the reduction of government ex
penditures we are unprepared. He
concluded that if we attempt to;
reconvert to peace too quickly, we
can lose our victory in World War
II, just as surely as we lose our
victory after World War I. "That.”
he said, "is the lesson of today.”

JTA NEWS 20 YEARS AGO
By JOHN KAYSTON, JTA Librarian
Settlement of a four-year-old libel suit in which Herman Bern
stein, author and editor, sought $200,000 damages from Henry Ford
because of a series of anti-Jewish articles which appeared in the
"Dearborn Independent” was announced by counsel for Mr. Bern
stein.
Mr. Ford retracted and apologized for parts of an article con
cerning Mr. Bernstein in the paper. The settlement agreement also
included payment of a sum. not made public, by Mr. Ford for ex
penses involved in the suit.
Bernstein's suit, which was filed in August, 1923, was the first
of the actions brought against Ford because of hLs anti-Jewish
campaign.
A duel was fought between I>r. Paolo Levi, secretary of
the Padua, Italy, Jewish Community, and I.ulgl Menini. secre
tary of the Fascist Academic Association. Dr. Levi challenged
Menini because of anti-Semitic propaganda which the latter
was spreading. Both were slightly wounded.
"Freedom of Jewish immigration to Palestine” was one of the
demands formulated by the Jewish workers of Palestine in a number
of resolutions adopted at the convention of the Palestiue Jewish
Labor Federation, representing all factions of the Jewish labor move
ment in the country. Another resolution demanded speedy action on
the part of the Palestine Government to solve the unemployment
problem.

Commons Cheers Resignation of Food Official
Who Made Anti-Semitic Remark
LONDON (JPS-Palcor)—Cheers
rang out in Commons last week
when food Minister John Strachey

ative MP Nicholson which implied
that the majority of black market
offenses are by Jews, Mr. Strachey
said if anyone could prove, or if
any evidence was produced to
show that offenses against the food
orders were committed dispropor
tionately by any particular race,
no one would object tq such a fact
being made public, but no evidence
of this sort is available.
Another Conservative MP said
that while he agreed that it was
| unfair to make anti-racial re-
| marks, he felt Ford may have been
I unjustly accused. Strachey pointed
! out that an inquiry into Ford’s in
terview with the German press
men established that he had made
remarks to them which can be
construed as a reflection on the
Jewish race. While we accept Mr.
Ford's statement that he did not
intend to reflect on the Jews as a
race, Strachey said, the adminis
trator of an office must not only
act Impartially but his impartial
ity must be evident in everything
he does and says.
