ROSH HASHONAH
5708
The universal wish for a new beginning is' fulfilled
spiritually for the Jewish religion on Sunday night the
eve of September 14th at sundown to sundown Septem
ber 15th. Orthodox and Conservative members of the
Jewish faith celebrate two days, through Tuesday, Sep
tember Kith. This is the New Year, or Rosh lla-shono.
It begins the holiday season of ten Days of Penitence,
which ends with Yom Kippur, the Sabbath of Sabbaths.
Prayers and Meditation beginning with the New Year
call for the rededication of the Jew to new aspirations
of faith in God and in our fellow men.
Rosh Ha-shono with its blowing of a ram’s horn as
part of the service in the synagogue, furnishes a note
of hope and a call to ail the world, Jewish and non-
Jewish, to return to the Lord who is of abundant kind
ness. This sound of the Shofar or ram’s horn is a warn
ing to all that the time to repent and amend one’s ways
is at hand. God will hold out forgiveness on the tenth
day to all who repent but the first step in this repent
ance is to make amends for the evil of one’s ways.
With the world in such a state of unrest it is well
for all to recall the spiritual foundations of our civilisa
tion which were laid in remote antiquity by the Jewish
people who were the first to conceive of one God and
one Humanity. This year marks the beginning of 5708,
a date which stems from the traditional Biblical date of
the creation of the world.

It was rushed to Hamburg bar

have blown a huge hole in the

The bloody battle on the Run

attempted to remove several men
described by British athorities as
the “ringleaders’’ of the resistance.
Among them was Mordechai Ros-
man, the acknowledged leader of
the deportees on the vessel who
was dragged off the ship uncon

several head wounds. Eye-wit
ness reports said that he fought
off six British soldiers ntil he was
subdued by several blows on the
head from wooden clubs.
A casualty list released by the
British tonight reported 17 Jewish
men injured, seven Jewish women
hurt and four women sent to hos

NEW YORK,(JTA)—Two voices
were raised in the American press
recently in brazen defense of race
hatred and those who purvey it.
Douglas Chandler, arch-anti-Se
mite and convicted traitor who
broadcast propaganda for the Nazis
during the war, and 28 mass se
dition trial defendents whose
names constitute an index of the
lunatic-fringe hate-mongers in
America, were championed re
spectively by columnists Westbrook
Pegler and John O’Donnell.
Mr. Pegler based his contribu
tion on the premise that “even the
“preaching and propagation of
racial hatred is not un-American;
it is a characteristic, a confirmed
notorious fault of ours. Mostly, I
think,” he says, “the true feeling
of those who hiss ‘race hatred’ as
a political catchword is not noble
‘democracy’ of spirit but envy and
the hatefulness of him who feels
somewhat inferior. We hear the
accusation made against persons
who reveal their own shame of race
or envy by adopting English, Irish
and Scotch names. . . .” Getting
to the Chandler case, Mr. Pegler

French Arresting Irgun, Sternist Aides After
Exposure of Alleged Plot to Bomb London
PARIS, (JTA) — French police
were this week investigating all
known Irgun and Stern Group rep
resentatives in France, following
the arrest of Rabbi Baruch Korff,
chairman of the American Political
Actions Committee for Palestine,
as he and two companions pre
pared to take off for London tq
bombard the British capital with
leaflets warning of aerial bombing
if Britain did not withdraw from
Palestine.
A spokesman for the Ministry of
the Interior, who revealed that Ir
gun and Sternist aides had been
under surveillance for several days,
said that the police were pursuing
inquiries in many directions. Many
Paris hotels were raided.
Those arrested with Rabbi Korff
were his secretary, Mrs. Judith
Rosenberger, 23, a native of Hung
ary, whose present nationality is
unknown, and Reginald Gilbert,
an English-bom American citizen
and former war pilot. All are
being held incommunicado. Sev

Polish Property Awaits 5,000 Claimants
WARSAW (JTA)—Experts of the Jewish Central Committee have
estimated that there are at least 5,000 buildings, factories and other
real property in Poland, valued at millions of dollars, that can be
legally claimed by Jew's residing abroad, whose families were wiped
out by the Germans.
In making this estimate public, the Committee drew attention to
the fact that under existing Polish laws, those claiming the property,
of relatives murdered by the Nazis must apply no later than Decern
ber 31, 1947. After that date, no claims will be accepted.
arrested, but their names were
not disclosed.
Korff and the other two Jailed
at the air field were questioned a
good part of Saturday night.
Meanwhile, police are seeking the
printer who prepared the leaflets
found in two suitcases carried by
the rabbi, and the persons who
placed the plane at his disposal.
They are also seeking to trace the
improvised aerial bombs found in
a house near the Paris abbatoirs.
The leaflet, which was signed
“Fighters for the Freedom of Is
rael,” the formal name of the
Stem Group, said in part that “we
will carry the war to the very
heart of the Empire. We will strike
with all the bitterness and fury of
our servitude and bondage. Peo
ple of England, press your govern
ment to quit Eretz Israel now. De
mand that your sons and daugh
ters return home, or you may nev
er see them again.”
The promptness with which the
police acted, and the scope of their
raids, indicated that the Surete
either had an agent planted in the
ranks of the extremists or that one
of the terrorists had betrayed his
companions to the police.

Rumania Is Asked
To Admit Relief
Supplies Duty Free
BUCIIARETS, (JTA) — The
Joint Distribution Committee has
appealed to the Rumanian Gov
ernment to restore duty-free sta
tus to its relief supplies, despite a
recently-enafcted law abolishing all
such exemptions.
In a memorandum to the Fi
nance Ministry, the JDC pointed
out that in view of the present
depression and unrest in the coun
try .it felt the Rumanian Govern
ment should extend whatever help
it possibly could to facilitate the
work of the organization which, it
emphasized, extends ait to non-
Jews as well as Jews.
The note also stressed the fact
that not only did the Bulgarian
Government exempt the JDC from
import duties, but it provides free
rail transportation, too.
British Cabinet Will

Cabinet will shortly begin a care
ful study of the majority and min

Alexander, Minister for Defense.
Upon completion of the study,
the sub-committee will report to

adopted by the British delegation
at the United Nations Assembly.
Unofficial exchanges of views with

Brith Trumpcldor
In U.S. Condemns Plan
NEW YORK, (JTA)—The Brith
Trumpeldor of America has an
nounced its opposition to the ma
jority report of the United Nations
Special Committee on Palestine
calling for partition of Palestine.
The organization adopted a reso
lution condemning the partition
plans at its convention during the
week-end in Qrahamsville, N. Y.
Other resolutions adopted in
cluded a “declaration of support
for the efforts of the Irgun Zvai
Leumi,” and a condemnation of
Britain’s suppression of the Brith
Trumpeldor in Palestine. The con
vention also expressed its opposi
tion to the “ideology of the He
brew Committee of National Lib
eration which tends to divide the
Jewish people into Hebrew and
Jew.” Moshe Ahrens of Boston
was elected president of the or
ganization, succeeding Aron Propes
who retained the post for seven
years.
Zionist Leaders
ZURICH, (JTA) — Commenting
on the report of the United Nations
Special Committee on Palestine,
Dr. Aoba Hillel Silver, in a state
ment before leaving for home,
called the United States the key
to success to the s€ttlement of the
Palestine problem.
Mrs. Judith Epstein, president of
Hadassah, asserted that although
Hadassah is satisfied with the
UNSCOP’s majority report, “We
are concerned with certain sec
tions of the report which repre
sent deprivations of territory which
are important for the establish
ment of a sound economic basis
in the proposed Jewish state.”
Dr. Israel Goldstein, American
Zionist leader and president of the
World Confederation of General
Zionists, asserted that Zionists
were receiving the report “with
reserve” and added that it contains
confusing elements. “It should be
said, however,” Dr. Goldstein de
clared, “that the majority report
shows a sincere effort to under
stand and to solve the Palestine
problem.”
Mendel Fisher, executive direc
tor of the Jewish National Fund,
stated that the UNSCOP report
did not fulfill all Zionist aspira
tions and that Zionists now need
a united front to meet the new
problems arising from the report.
