To Hold Third Convention in Savannah
SAVANNAH —Dr. William Wex-

Jewish Educational Alliance, has
been named program chairman for
the third Annual Convention of
(JWB) to be held at the De Soto
Hotel, Savannah, Georgia, October
11, 12 and 13, according to word
received here today from Jules
Paglin, New Orleans, president of
the Southern Section of the Na- the section,

principles defininf the fundament
al purposes of the Jewish Commu
nity Center will be the principal
business before the convention.
This statement, to be formulated
late in September by the Jewish
I center division committee of JWB
j in accordance with the major rec
ommendation of the monumental
j JWB Survey Repor\ will be studied
during the coming year by the 309
j Jewish Centers and YM-YWllAs
affiliated with JWB in the United
States and Canada before its final
I adoption by JWB's National Coun
cil at the 1948 Annual Mec ,ng of
I JWB.
j Following such approval, accept-
1 ance of these principles within
three years will become a condition

for continued membership in JWB
by centers now affiliated and an
immediate condition of affiliation
for all new’ centers.
The significance to the Ameri
can Jewish community of the
statement of principles may be
measured, it was pointed out at
the Jewish Educational Alliance,
by the fact that it will effect 309
Jewish centers and YM-YWHAs
with a membership of 500,000
voting people and adults, facilities
representing an investment of
■MO.000 000. annual expenditures of
S8.000 000 and staffs of 1.200 pro
visional workers.
The Southern Section of JWB
includes 16 o'her renters, in addi-

hip of more than 40,000.
An outgrowth of the JWB Sur-
1 vey Commission's report, whose
recommendations, as submitted to
I and adopted by the 1947 JWB An-
! nual Meeting, disclosed the need
for a generaly accepted statement
of principles defining the purpose
of Jewish Centers, the statement
to be discussed at the Southern
Section Convention will enunciate
1 the fundamental tenets on the
I basis of which the Jewish Ceister
I is to be fashioned.

MRS. HATTIE S. SMOLEN
DIES IN CALIFORNIA
Mrs. Hattie Schmalheiser Smol-
cn. native Savannahian who has
been living in California for the
past 20 years, died at a Los Ange
les hospital Aug. 28 after an ill
ness of several weeks. A member
■ of a well-known Savannah family,
j Mrs. Smolcn s oldest brother is Ed-
| ward Small, outstanding Holly-
I wood movie producer.
Mrs. Smolen is survived by her
j husband. Ruben Smolen, Beverly
i Hills. Ca ; two daughters, Mrs.
Bernard Chase. Beverly Hills, and
I Mrs. Daniel Schlaclet. Chicago.
; HI- • her father. Phillip Schmal-
I heiser. Miami. Fla.: three brothers,
: Edward Small. Morris Small and
Joseph Small, all of Hollywood;
two sisters, Mrs. victor sutker, Log
Angeles, and Mrs. Oils Lipsitz, Mi.
ami: and a number of grandchil
dren, aunts ind uncles, and nieces
and nephews. Among these latter
are an aunt, Mrs. T. Konter, and a
niece, Mrs. Herman Cranman of
Savannah.
Mrs. Smolen’s father, bom in a
Polish salt mining town, came to
Savannah in 1893, and lived here
for over a half-century. He was
in the roofing and sheet metal
business for many years.

country, all right-but freedom

license signifies a person’s right
not only to ply his trade, but his
right to protection against unde
sirable competition, unfair prac
tices, or shady methods.

licensed, like photographers, or
