HENRY PERLMAN
HUNTSBORO, Ala. — Henry
Perlman, well known merchant,
died suddenly August 24 at his
home here.
Funeral services were conducted
at the Britton & Dobbs Chapel
Aiigust 26. Rabbi H. R. Friedman
of Atlanta and Rabbi Funk of Co
lumbus officiated. Burial was in
Kiverdale Cemetery.
Surviving Mr. Perlman are two
sons. Sol. L. Perlman and Harry M.
Perlman, both of Huntsboro; one
daughter. Mrs. Minnie Clein of
Augusta, and five grandchildren.

Beth Jacob Engages
Double Refugee for
Holiday Services
A refugee of two World Wars,
Jacob L. Friend, is currently con
ducting holiday services for Beth
Jacob Synagogue in Atlanta.
At the age of 24, he fled his
home in Poland where he had been
ordained a rabbi. He wound up
in Shanghai where he carved a
! new career for himself—in busi
ness and as a leader of the Jewish
I community.

war marooned him in Manilla)
! where he had narrow escapes with ]
\ the Japanese.
j In addition to being a Hebraic i
scholar, he is an accomplished as- !
tronomer. He hopes to remain j
in the States, where he has sev
eral brothers, including one in
F.astman, Ga., and where are a
number of individuals who remem
ber him and his family in the old
country.

Mrs. Isadore Heiman.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Cone of
Louisville are guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Lee Strasburger.

end in Macon as guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Happ.
Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Schiffer of
St. Paul have been guests in At
lanta of M. Stephen Schiffer.
Mrs. Seymour Samuels of Nash
ville has been the guest of Mr. and
Mrs. Alex Rosenfeld.
Mrs. Henry Bauer has returned
from a vacation at Savanah
Beach.

Mrs. Eva Sloan is in New York
j visiting her daughter, Esther, who
j has just been graduated by New
York University. Miss Sloan will
return to Atlanta after a visit to
Washington with Dr. and Mrs.
Mil ton Rubin and to Louisville
with Dr. and Mrs. Charles Sherter.
Mrs. Rubin is the former Miss
Louise Barrett of Atlanta. Miss
Sloan will begin wirk on her mas
ter’s degree at Emory University.

Miss Arline Roberta Crown of
Brooklyn and Melvyn Foster, for
merly of Savanah, were married
August 31 at the Waldorf Astoria
Hotel in New York.
Rabbi A. N. Moseson of Jamaica
officiated. Malcolm Foster was his
brother’s best man.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Fost
er of Jamaica, formerly of Savan
nah, Mr. Foster is currently at
tending New York University. He
is the nephew of the Misses Esther
and Bertha Foster of Savannah.
The bride, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Saul Crown of Brooklyn, was
graduated by hoi, attended Ohio
State University.

spent the holidays with his par
ents, Mr and Mrs. Isadore Heiman.

have returned home in Greenwood,
S. C.. after being the guests of Mr.
and Mrs. Marion Rosenberg.
Richard Heiman is a student

Atlanta-Wide Succoth Youth Festival
Oct. 5; Bureau Projects Study Institute
The second annual Succoth
Youth Festival sponsored by the
Atlanta Bureau of Jewish Educa
tion and the Jewish School of At-'
lanta will be held on Sunday, Oct.
5, at 3:00 p. m. at the Wm. Bass
Junior High School, 1080 Euclid
Ave.. N. E. This festival open to
young people of school age, will in
clude a program of music, a dance
lecital, inspirational mesagv;,
movies, a beautiful door prize and
a special treat. Admission will
be by ticket only and free tickets
will be available at the Ahavath
Achim Schools, Arbeiter Ring
schule. Or* VeShalom Schools,
Shearith Israel Schools, the Tem
ple Religious School .the Jewish
Educational Alliance and at the
office of the Bureau, 44 Vi. Marietta
Street, N. W. Graham Jackson,
nationally famous for his play on
the accordion, will share the fea
ture spot with the Jack Rand
dancers. Rabbi Harry H. Epstein,
will deliver the Succoth message;
Rabbi Hyman R. Friedman, the in
vocation; Rabbi Joseph I. Cohen,
the benediction; and Rabbi Rosen,
new director of the Arbeiter Ring
Shule, will be introduced. The
festival has a three-fold purpose:
celebration of the Holiday of Suc
coth, observance of National Jew
ish Education Month, and as
stimulation for greater registration
at the Jewish Schools. Arrange
ments are in the hands of Louis
Schwartzman, Executive Director
of the Bureau.
A meeting of adult Jewish or
ganizations, sponsored by the At
lanta Bureau of Jewish Education,
evolved plans for an Institute of
Jewish studies to be held on alter
nate Tuesday evenings for ten ses
sions beginning on Oct. 28. Two
courses will be offered, one hour
ea«h, from 8:30 to 10:30 p. m. on
“Contemporary Jewish Problems”
and “Jewish Experience in Ameri
ca.” Atlanta Jewish organizations
-indicated a desire to co-sponsor
this series and when formal action
is taken, further details of the
series will be made public. The
Institute of Jewish studies will be
an evening course and is not to be
confused with the Atlanta Jewish
Women's Institute sponsored by
the Federation of Jewish Women’s
Organizations to be held on alter
nate Tuesday mornings at the
Mayfair Club beginning Oct. 21,
for which registration is now being
accepted.

Britain Rejected
U. S. Exodus Plea
WASHINGTON. <JTA) — The
United State Government urged
the British Government to recon
sider its decision to send the 4,400
“Exodus 1947” refugees to Ham
burg, but was told by the British
that there was no place other than
Germany to house them, Secretary
of State George C. Marshall told
a press conference here. Marshall
declined to say whether this gov
ernment was satisfied with the
answer given by the British gov
ernment with regard to the mat
ter.
The United States government,
Marshall said, was keenly aware of
the unfortunate re£ 'Its that would
follow the British decision to re
turn the refugees to Germany and
asked the British to change their
plans. Marshall pointed out that
the French offer to receive some
of the refugees Is still open so that
they do not necessarily have to
remain in Germany.
Miss Sharon Halpin who has
been spending the summer at Sa
vannah Beach has returned to her
studies at New York University.
Irving Borstein, yonger son of
Rev. and Mrs. P. Borstein, has
joined his brother, Leonard, as a
student at the Talmudic Academy
of Baltimore.
Mrs. Sidney A. Clein and son,
Eddie, and Mrs. Herman Jacobson
have returned to Atlanta from New
York and Baltimore.
Miss Esther Greenbaum of Sa
vannah is recuperating after a re
cent major operation.
Dr. Larry Bergman was recently
offered a research fellowship in
cardiovascular disease at the Yale
University School of Medicine and
a research fellowship in renal dis
ease at the Bellevue Hospital in
New York City.
Mrs. Norman Mirsky and Miss
Zelda Mirsky have returned from
Detroit after attending the Wilk-
Estroff wedding.
Miss Gertrude Kuker of New
York is a visitor of Mr. and Mrs.
Morris Janko.

of a daughter, Rena Belle, Sep
tember 4.

Michael, September 4. Mrs. Berlin
