'Catholic Priest' '
To Be Rabbi
From London Jewish Chronicle
For over a year following the
German occupation of Hungary
a Jewish university student trav
elled freely about the country as
a member of Jewish resistance
groups, disguised as a Catholic
priest.
So effective was his disguise
that genuine priests accepted
him as one of them and tlw
Germans and Hungarians never
challenged his identity. But he
was eventually betrayed.
The “priest’’ recently arrived
in London to study at Jews’ Col
lege and is hoping shortly to ob
tain a Rabbinics degree. His
name is Jeddia Weinberger and
he is 24 years old.
Mr. Weinberger, who told his
story to a Jewish Chronicle re
porter, was studying at Buda
pest University when the Ger
mans marched into Hungary in
March 1944. He disguised him
self as a Catholic priest In order
to escape the attentions of the
Nazis and the Hungarians.
“I found it quite easy to obtain
a priest's clothing,” he said, “and
I secured false papers showing
that I had been converted two
years previously. I then left
Budapest with my mother for a
town on the Hungarian-Ruman-
ian border, and there I lived for
six mcynths as a Catholic priest.
“I was in constant touch with
the Jewish resistance group com
posed of members of the Zionist
organizations. Our main work
was to help Jews who were in
danger of being arrested, and
we supplied them with false pa
pers.”
While trying to help a Buda
pest family, Mr. Weinberger was
betrayed. He and his mother
were arrested and told that they
would be executed.
Fortunately, the Russians at
tacked shortly afterwards. Moth
er and son were taken to Buda
pest and it was not long before
Mr. Weinberger was able to start
his work again, thanks to the

help of the resistance group.
Within 24 hours of regaining
freedom he again adopted the
priest's disguise. He kept it up
until the liberation.
The work of the Jewish resist
ance groups in Hungary was very
warmly praised by Mr. Wein
berger. Large numbers of Jews,
he said, were saved by their ef
forts.
Mr. Weinberger speaks He
brew fluently. A native of
Prague, he intends to return to
Czechoslovakia on the comple
tion of his course at Jews’ Col
lege and to take up the position
of a Rabbi, as there is a short
age of spiritual leaders In that
country. «
