JERUSALEM, July 20, 1947—
Writing a New Year s letter and
extending High Holiday greetings
from the Holy Land is a privilege
I have long dreamed about and.
thank Ood, at this miment, am
exercising. After having set foot
upon and absorbed Impressing and
inspiration from many of the ris-
toric and sacred sites this land of
Israel boasts of. I have now at long
last come to the holy city of Jeru
salem, there to spend my few re
maining weeks in Palestine.
Today. July 20. is a rather im
portant day here, inasmuch as the
United Nations Special Committee
on Palestine is leaving for Beirut
In the Lebanon after concluding
in Palestine during this last week,
its twelfth and last public hearing
on the Palestine question <here
in the large YMCA Building in
Jerusalem). This committee .it is
felt by many, can if it so desires
do a great deal, through its recom
mendations towards relieving many
phases of the Jewish problem.
I managed to get into the com
mittee hearings the last two days
as Moshe Shertok, the political
head of the Jewish Agency in Pal
estine was summing up the Jewish
case. His extemporized testimony
which lasted for about three hours
was the most brilliant and logical
demonstration of the inescapable
necessity for a Jewish state, that I
have ever heard. In his presenta
tion he analyzed many of the prob
lems germane to the Jews, Arabs,
nnd the British administration of
Palestine. Throughout the long
summation the entire audience,
including the members of the com
mittee of inquiry, did not bestir
for one moment, but sat complete
ly engrossed in the coherent and
cogent pleadings of a man who
bespoke the sorrows and difficul
ties. the hopes and strivings of his
people. We nil took pride in Sher-
tok's summation, which left the
committee with very little to ask
him after he completed his talk.
The convincing effect of his re
marks seemed to ring through the
hall after he was through. We
wtre all satisfied with the presen
tation but the question racing
through our minds was how would
the Jury receive the case.
Thoughts like these perturbed
me no end. Obviously the commit
tee too was impressed and moved

by this plea on behalf of the surv-
ing remnant of Jewry and on be- j
half of the Palestinian Yishuv for j
unrestricted Immigration of Jews
into our homeland, for a viable
Jewish state. Yet the crux of the
trouble seems to be that the Jew
in bespeaking his anguish and j
plight makes a momentary impres
sion on the committee during the ;
hearings, later during private i
closed sessions of the committee
when it deliberates over recom
mendations then oblivious to all
that they’ve heard, hard and real'
politics and the placating of all j
parties and British and American
interests become the dominant
considerations which threaten to
undermine any realy solution or
recommendation. Although some j
of us tend to question the efficacy
of this committee’s recommenda
tions, I still feel that If this com- j
mittee and later tire United Na
tions so desire they can really do
a great deal towards mitigating
the Jewish problem throughout the
world by recommending and set
ting up the machinery for the
creation of a viable Jewish state
in Palestine.
Although the UN committee de
liberations and recommendations
have been the topic in and out of
the press here in recent weeks, one
factor has left a lasting impres
sion upon me as a result of my
being in Palestine. The feeling
has been engendered within me
everywhere I’ve been in this land,
namely that the Yishuv. the Jew
ish Community here 650.000 strong
'KEN YIRBOO) ’’may they in
crease in numbers" is no longer a
baby to be toyed with by anyone.
The Yishuv has come of age and
knows its strength. Regardless of
military obstacles of supposedly
insuperable difficulties imposed by
tlie British Palestine administra
tion, the Jews here in this country
have dug into the soil so deep
and hard that they’re here to stay
live grow and develop.
People here in all walks of life
work very hard and life here be
sides the physical toil plus the
martial law curfews, and searches,
merely serves to intensify and
strengthen rather than weaken the
dogged determination of our Jews
here to keep on working, sacrific
ing and denying themselves be
cause this is their land, a place for
their children and coming genera
tions—a place for Jews from ev
erywhere to come from which
they will never permitc themselves
or permit others to take away from
them. Thank God for this spirit
and'stenacity.
A’m Yisroel Chai May Israel
live and keep on living in its own
land. May this coming year, 5708
bear witness to the fruitions of all
our hopes as Jew's, tire redemption
of our people and land, the crea
tion of a Jewish state.
