vealed that the DPs would pro
duce and help assemble articles for
South American export, and that
it was impossible, under the law,
to pay displaced persons here on
temporary visas and that any
profits which might accrue from
their work might be retained by
Mr. Ccfaen and his associates.
Roscoe C. Emery, Mr. Cohen’s
publicity representative, said he
believed that while no cash could
be paid to the trainees, they could
be credited on paper with appren
tice wages, which would be de
ducted from the cost of bringing
them to this country and main
taining them here, which will be
borne by Mr. Cohen and his as
sociates.
Under the scheme, 25,000 fami
lies from tlie U. S. occupation zone
of Germany, 85 per cent of the
Jewish and the rest largely Greeks
and Czechs, would be brought to
now deserted Quoddy Village to be
trained for from six to nine months
for resettlement in Brazil, Uruguay
and Argentina. Mr. Cohen asserts
these countries are receptive to his
proposal for the admission of refu
gees. The rehabilitation and re
education of the Jewish families
would be in the orthodox Jewish
tradition, with kosher food served,
and observance of the Sabbath on
Saturday, Mr. Cohen said.
The project, according to Mr.
Cohen, has found favor with Presi
dent Truman, and Clark Clifford,
of the White House staff, has been
assigned to work out the details.
Community officials of Eastport,
Maine, adjacent to Quoddy Vil
lage, are enthusiastic over the
scheme which was outlined to
them by Senator Owne D. Brew
ster, of Maine, and have agreed to
help facilitate it.
