On an October day in 1843, a
handful of men — comparative
newcomers to these shores—were
inspired by the vision of American
Democracy to make a covenant
with the heritage of the land in
which they found sanctuary from
the tyrannies of the Old World.
Those newly-adopted sons of
America were the founding fathers
| of B'nai B'rith (Sons of the Cove-
} nant), now the oldest and largest
| Jewish service organization in the
United States.
With B'nai B'rith now in its
second century, it becomes in
creasingly apparent how wisely
and how well its founders built.
They designed a program encom
passing the purest principles of a
progressive democracy and fur
thering the highest interests of
humanity, which successive gen
erations of B'nai B’rith leadership
have followed with immeasurable
benefit to the people of Israel.
Considered in its broadest sense,
that October day in 1843 was a
veritable Rosh Rashonah for
j American Jewry. Free from doc-
i trinal differences, B'nai B'rith
' then and now affords a common
i r latform for service on the part
i of all elements in the Jewish com-
! munity because it is universal, its
' objectives are of interest to all
| Jews, and its emphasis i3 upon the
positive values in Jewish life.
Because of this well-controlled.

though non-dogmatic approach,
B'nai B'rith over the years has
kept pace with the problems of the
nation and the Jewish people.
Though guided by tradition, tra
dition has been no restraint in
discarding activities that have out
lived their usefulness. B’nai B’rith
has remained dynamic by meet
ing the vital, day to day, needs of
the Jewish people.
Representing a cross-section of
the American Jewish community,
B'nai B'rith contributes to the na
tional health of American democ
racy through an intensive year-
round integrated program of serv
ice on both national and commun
ity levels. It Is a program executed
by more than 300,000 members in
men’s lodges, women’s chapters
and youth groups throughout the
United States and Canada. Above
all it is a program making a dis
tinct and valuable contribution to
the welfare of the nations.
When others bemoan the lack
of moral fibre and responsibility
in youth and attribute all our ail
ments—political, economic and so
cial—to a misguided younger gen
eration, B’nai B'rith devotes it
self to training and molding of
thousands of young people for
healthy and useful lives through
youth agencies emphasizing char
acter building.
Recognizing that youth is the
repository of positive influences
and Jewish valups, B'nai B’rith has
organized Hillel Foundations, the
B’nai B’rith Youth Organization
and the Vocational ©Service Bu
reau to mold the character of to
morrow's citizens and to turn their
interests into constructive chan
nels.
On the international scene,
B’nai B’rith is helping to arouse
the conscience of the world to rec-
ognize the plight of hundreds of
thousands of Displaced Persons, of
every faith, lodged in the camps of
Europe.
These are but a few examples
of the B’nai B’rith program in
action. Its scope lays down a
cliallenge to the future.
The acceptance of this chal
lenge by its membership points
toward a more unified American
Jewish community, even more es
sential service and, as President
Roosevelt once said: “its (the
B'nai B’rith1 program of good will
strives toward harmony among the
component elements comprising
our Ameilean society.”

Renew French Offer
| To Exodus Jews
PARIS, (JTA) — The French
j government has decided to renew
j its offer of hospitality to the Exo-
I dus refugees, a representative of
! the French Foreign Office an-
i nounced at a press conference.
; here.
At the same time, he revealed
j the conditions which Fiance had
| proposed to the British to govern
the admission of the refugees. The
British would have to furnish
names and particulars of the vol
unteers—the spokesman stressed
the word volunteers. After that,
the French would issue collective
entry visas for temporary residence
to all Exodus Jews who volun
teered.
Although the Foreign Office rep
resentative said that the Jews
would be granted regular entry
visas rather than transit papers,
he added that the number of Exo
dus immigrants who entered would
be subtracted from the total num
ber of DP’s who are permitted to
enter France en route to other
countries. When the Jews arrive in
the country they will be accommo
dated in “holiday” camps by Entre
Aide Fianeaise, a JDC supported
voluntary relief agency. Facilities
will probably be readied for them
by the end of this month.

THE UN OUTLOOK
The line-up with regard to the
power which will assume trus
teeship over Palestine for the
interim period seems to be as
follows . . . Britain, as well as
the United States, is interested
in keeping the Soviet Union
from getting a foothold in the
Mediterranean . . . Therefore,
they will do everything they can
to prevent a joint big-power
trusteeship over Palestine . . .
In this they will probably be suc
cessful, if an understanding is
reached between the United
States and Britain under which
the former will support a pro
posal that the Palestine trustee
ship be vested in the hands of
Britain . . . However, the under
standing will also have to pro
vide that Britain may call upon
any government she wishes to
share with her the administra
tion of the trusteeship ... In
this way, Britain, as the princi
pal trustee, will be give a free
hand to select the governments
with whom she wants to share
the “burden” . , . Britain will
then obviously call upon the
United States but not on the
U. S. S. R. . . . It stands to rea
son that the USSR, even if bar
red from participating in the
trusteeship over Palestine, can
claim participation in the UN
administration of Jerusalem,
since there is a lot of Russian
property in that city . . . But
on this question, too, Gromyko
would have no chance of win
ning, if America and Britain
agree on basic decisions as to
how to implement the UNSCOP
report. . , .
