The launching of the greatest phil
anthropic drive in American his
tory—the $170,000,000 campaign
of the United Jewish Appeal—pnd
the special session of the United
Nations on Palestine, as well as an
unusual intensification of inter
est In all things Jewish on the
part of the general public, high
lighted the year's Jewish events in
the U. S.
Meeting in Atlantic City early in
December. 1940, delegates from
more than 2,000 American com
munities throughout the country
voted to launch the precedent-
breaking campaign goal of $170,-
Officially launched in Washing
ton in February, the campaign was
given added impetus by the sup
port of such outstanding national
figures as Gen. Dwight D. Eisen
hower, who pointed out that the
liquidation of UNRRA, the immi
gration restiictions to Palestine
and other areas and the unrest in
Eastern Europe had created a
situation which left the Jewish
communities in Europe, particu
larly the 250,000 Jews residing in
the DP camps, almost entirely de
pendent on the aid being sent them
by American Jewry.

David Ben Gurion, Emanuel Neu

ed before the UN to plead the case
of the Jewish people, urging that a
Jewish National Home in Pales
tine be rreated and that the right
of the Jews to enter tire country |
and settle on the land freely be
upheld.
After nearly three weeks of hear
ing testimony o nr the Palestine is

pointed an cleyctt-tnember inquiry
committee wi ll wide power's to in
vestigate the situation in Pales

Early in 1947, President Truman,
in his State of Union message,
said that the United States had
not done enough in admitting large
number of European displaced
persons to this country. Calling
for legislation which would enable
greater numbers of refugees to ent
er the United States as quota im-
mirranls, the President also de
cried racial bigotry in this country
and told Congress that existing
legislation does not reach "the
limit of federal power to protect
| the civil rights of its citizens.” Mr
Truman also urged the establish
ment of a permanent federal law
: which would prevent racial and re-
I ligious discrimination in employ
ment.
The Stratton Bill to admit 400.-
000 European displaced persons to
| this country during the next four
I vears w as strongly supported by
: the administration, as well as by
several cabinet members, including
.Secretary of State Marshall and
former Secretary of War Patterson.
Meanwhile, a bill, described as one
! meant to overcome objections to
[ the Stratton bill, was Introduced
in the House by Congressman Chelf
| cf Kentucky which called for the
I admission of 100.000 DP's in the
! fiscal year following passage of
j the bill. However, no action was
| taken before Congress adjourned
for its summer recess.
The increase in Zionist activity
in this country readied a new high
! in 5707, with the Zionist Organi
zation of America reporting that
its greatly-expanded membership
was actively engaged in numerous
j Zionist projects. At the ZOA's
50 annual convention in New York,
I where Dr. Emanuel Neumann was
elected president to succeed Dr.
| Abba Hillel Silver, it was pointed
out that the assertion by Secre
tary of State Marshall to Congress
j that America's traditional policy
! on Palestine had not changed was
"most gratifying."
Judge Morris Rothenberg. presi-
j dent of the American Jewish Na-
| tional Fund, reported to the 2,000
delegates that American Jews had
contributed some $14,000,000 to
the JNF during the first nine
months of 5707. It was also re
ported that the JNF now owns
900.000 dunams of land in Pales
tine of the total 27,000.000.
The dramatic revocation of
the charter of the Georgia anti-
Semitic group, the Columbians,
and the imprisonment of its
leader, highlighted the fight
against anti-Semitism in the
United States. A report issued
by the Anti-Defamation League
pointed out that domestic rab
ble-rousers and their various or
ganizations. which had been
driven underground during the
war. re-emerged “bold and arti
culate** in 5707, but their in
fluence on public thinking had
been curtailed.
The ADL asserted that anti-
Semitic incidents were offset by
strong positive action on the part
of an informed public. The sur
vey revealed also that a section
of the U. S. population remains in
fested with the virus of anti-Semi
tism and that a large number of
anti-Semitic and un-American or
ganizations continue without any
interference. Although negligible
in influence at present, the lead
ers of these groups maintain close
relations. The ADL report also
added that the biggest stumbling-
block to these hate groups was an
informed public opinion, as a re
sult of which these groups failed
to make any real headway among
the American people.
An awakening of interest in
Jewish religious education was
manifested in 5707 with several
groups seeking to raise the stand-
ante of teaching in the country’s
schools. The first World Confer
ence on Jewish Education met this
summer at the Hebrew university
in Jerusalem, with many delegates
attending from the United States.
At Waltham, Mass., plans for the
opening of the first all-Jewish
university—Brandeis University—
were nearing completion, with the
institution's formal opening sche
duled for September, 1948.
The fiftieth anniversary of the
Jewish Daily Forward was cele
brated this year with congratula
tions pouring in on Abraham Ca-
han, veteran editor of the Yiddish
newspaper, from all sources, in
cluding the White House. In Cin
cinnati, the 23rd annual conven
tion of the Histadruth Ivrith, Na
tional Organization for Hebrew
Culture, voted to extend its pro
gram of Hebrew culutral activities.
By and large, In 5707, the words
“Jew, Palestine, and Zionism” were
printed more often on the front
pages of America's newspapers
than ever before.
