Laud Anglo-Jewish Press for Aid in Compiling

wholehearted cooperation" was revealed here with the publication of
the two-volume set. “American Jews in World War II.”
In the acknowledgements for Volume II—the Honor Roll volume
listing tlie more than 40.000 names of American Jewish men and
women who either won awards or who laid down their lives in the
battle against the Axis—the following passage appears:
“To the English-Jewish press special thanks are due for its
whole-hearted cooperation in presenting material made available by

the JWB Public Relations Department; for its Invaluable aid in the
work of gathering war records, and for the generosity of its columns

BALTIMORE, Md.— (Palcorl —
Rabbi Morris S. Lazaron. of the
American Counclr of Judaism,
chose Rosh Hashanah as tiie oc
casion for a vicious attack on Jew
ish state proposals and for defense
of British behavior in the Exo
dus tragedy.
The Zionists have accepted the
UNSCOP recommendations, with
reservation, and the American
Government “is being pressured
to take the leadership and support
a Jewish state.’’ the Baltimore
rabbi said. Despite claims to the
contrary, “our government has
never given official support for
the establishment of a Jewish state
in Palestine. . . . We must sup
port a Palestine homeland, but
not a Jewish state.’’ On the Exo
dus affair he said: “It is a sad
spectacle which reflects on Eng
land's glorious name, but any na
tion caught in such a situation
might have been guilty of the
same thing." The Zionists in
structed the Exodus refugees to
make martyrs of themselves and
"used their pitiful helplessness to
create a situation which v/ould
evoke world sympathy for Zion
ists ends. That is the terrible truth.
It Is the latest in a long story of
Zionist extremist hypocrisy, un
scrupulous propaganda and exploi
tation of our brothers’ misery.”

LONDTON, (JTA)—The Board
of Deputies of British Jews has
voted to launch an extraordinary
appeal for funds to fight the me
nacing growth of an’i-Semtism in
England.
Speakers representing all sec
tions of the Jewish community
warned of the significant rise of
antl-Jewish sentiments among
large numbers of Britons. Pof.
ftelig Brodetsky, president of the
board, said that “the problem of
anti-Semitism has become of vi
tal importance In the life of the
eounrty." He disclosed that the
executive committee of the Depu
ties has been in constant contact
with the authorities on the prob
lem.
Earlier the board sent a message i
to the Jewish Anti-Fascist Com- j
mittce of Moscow asking that a>
angements be made for a represn-
tailve Anglo-Jewish delegation to
visit the USSR in order to devolop
closer contacts with Russian Jews.
The message was in reply to one
from the Anti-Fascist Committee
which expressed concern over the
recent wave of anti-Jewisli Inci
dents in Britain. The Russian
group’s note also voiced its de-
temination to cooperate with all
democratic forces in eradicating
all vestiges of fascism.
Meanwhile, two large fascist
meetings was held this week-end
on Betlinal Greene and at Dalston,
a Jewish populated section of Lon
don, which has been the scene of
several disturbances. Several La
bor M. P.’s attended the latter
meetings to gather facts for a full-
scale fight when Parliament re
convenes next month to secure
legislation outlawing fascist pro
paganda. Geoffrey Hamm, a Mos
ley lieutenant, was arrested after
lie addressed the meeting.
Earlier, Hamm, leader of the
fascist British League of Ex-Serv
icemen, stated that he is prepar
ing the way for the return to the
political scene of Mosley.
Home Secretary James Cliuter
Ede has announced that he had
turned over two cases of anti-

Polish Situation Improves
Britain Seeking Mandate Aid?
LONDON, (JTA) — Although there are varying interpretations
here of the decision on Palestine taken tills week-end by the British
Cabinet, almost the entire press, including usually well informed pa
pers, agree that the government decided that it cannot continue to
administer the Mandate unaided.
It is understood that Colonial Secretary Arthur Creech-Jones is
scheduled to leave by air for Flushing Meadow, and will tell the U. N.
General Assembly that Britain wants to withdraw its troops from
Palestine if the Assembly backs th UNSCOP majority report without
any revisions..
The press also states that Creech-Jones will carry a personal
message from Foreign Minister Bevin to Secretary of State Marshall,
suggesting that while whatever decision the Assembly reaches is being
implemented, there must be seme revision of Britain’s responsibility
for maintaining the peace in Palestine.
It Is reported that the Cabinet was disinclined to accept either the
majority or minority UNSCOP recommendations as they stand and
feels that some new solution or a modification of the UNSCOP reem-
mendatlons is necessary. The majority ®f the Cabinet Inrii :ated that
they favored quitting Palestine, but do not plan any sudden British
withdrawal, but rather a shortening of the two-year transition period
recommended by he U.N. Special Commiltcc.

■ JERUSALEM. — (JTA) — The
Hagannah announced this week
that it had been instrumental In
smashing an extremist counter
feiting ring which has been turn
ing out forged U. S. bank notes, as
well as checks on American banks.
The Haganah statement said
that following complaints by many
Jews who had been victimized by
the forged checks, it assigned in
vestigators to the extremists.
These agents discovered that the
counterfeiters’ headquarters were
in Herzlia, under the direction of
a Jerman non-Jew who entered
Palestine illegally in 1939. As a
result of the Haganah action, po
lice raided the headquarters and
discovered equipment for making
$20 and A50 bills.
