FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
Focus on Loss of Life and Property Damage
Fire loss in property and lives
comes into emphasis throughout
the South and nation as commu
nities every where join in observ
ance of Fire Prevention Week Oct.
5-11.
Led by a proclamation from
President Truman, civic leaders
are seeking to bring to public at
tention the twin objectives of Fire
Prevention Week—to rid “our
homes and community of the haz
ards which account for the major
ity of fires, and to focus attention
on the careless habits which take
such a high toll of life and prop
erty.”
The National Fire Protection As
sociation, closely identified with
the week's purpose, has called at
tention to a sharp increase in fire
losses which every day take a toll
of about 30 lives.
Last year, approximately 11.000
persons were burned to death and
more than 20.000 persons were in
jured in fires. The association
charged that needless fires were
seriously jeopardizing the national
economy through 600,000 fires with
a property loss alone of $561,000.-
000. The 1946 losses represented
a 25 per cent increase over the
year before and 3 per cent higher
than the last pre-war year.
Some 47,000 fires alone were
caused by misuse of electricity,
with a loss of about $40,000,000.
Much of this resulted from the
work of amateur electricians.
Rubbish still tops the list of
major causes of fire outbreak,
with about 300,000 American homes
attacked by fire each year.

a Swiss offer of $11,700,000 to be
derived from the liquidation of
German assets in Switzerland for
use In the resettlement of dis
placed persons, the State Depart
ment said this week.
