Rudin Denounces "Bystanders” lo Jewish
Life; Attacks Rabbi Lazaron, N. Y. Times
NEW YORK.—Speaking at the
j opening exercises of the Jewish
j Institute of Religion in New York
Son October 1. Rabbi Jacob P. Ru-
j din of Temple Beth-El, Great Neck,
N. Y.. denounced those who are
custody because the Rumanian
branch of the JDC cannot pay the
huge duties, amounting to about
70 per cent of the local market
j v alue of the products, which the
I tax office lias placed against the
I food, medicine and clothing.
The JDC has appealed the mat
ter to the Finance Ministry which
has done little to ease the situa
tion. although the duty against in
dividual relief parcels has been
slashed drastically. If the duty
is not paid on the relief supplies
within a short period, they are
liable to seizure.

care at all what happens to Jews in
Palestine. We are Americans, and
we have no bond that binds us to
a Jewish Palestine. We have no
ties with them. We are bystand
ers!’
“So. instead of millions of Jews,
there are a few hundred thousand I
Jews who have voiced theif* sup
port of Zionism by affiliating
themselves with the Zionist Or- ]
ganiaztion of America. And in
stead of sympathy and under
standing. we iiave been kicked and
beaten and trampled. And the
forty-three hundred Jews on the
ship, Exodus 1947, are driven from
Palestine and forced back into
lands of hatred with trudgeons
and gas and hoses. This would not
be if Jews were not bystanders; if
they had given the proud support
that a proud cause deserves.
“This guilt of the bystander
does not belong only to the ordi
nary Jew in the ordinary congre
gation and community. It is guilt
which has to be acknowledged by
more powerful instruments as well.
Take the NEW YORK TIMES for
example. The NEW YORK TIMES
plays a kind of game witfh refer
ence to objectivity in Jewish life.
It states that it does not take
sides; that despite its own dis
agreement with the Zionist point
of view, it will be perfectly fair.
Both sides, Zionist and non-Zion
ist, will be equally represented in
its pikes.
"I watched this specious policy
in action on the day of Rosh Hash-
anah. when the NEW YORK
TIMES was a bystander and not
an innocent one, either. In a fav
ored position in the paper was a
virtually full column of almost a
hundred lines reporting in detail
the violent and unbridled attack
on Zionism delivered by Rabbi
Morris Lazaron of Baltimore from
his pulpit on the eve of Rosh
Hashanah. That was newsworthy,
said the NEW YORK TIMES, in
effect. An the only other sermons
reported in that issue of the paper
was a miscellany of disjointed ex
tracts from three sermons, to
talling some twenty lines. And
these brief sentence quotes, for I
that is all they were, were buried |
deep in a general news item about
the Holy Days; and the general
item was buried, literally on the
same page with the obituary no
tices.
“That is playing the part of a
bystander in Jewish life, and even
a great newspaper, in that role, is
not a pretty sight; nor is it in
nocent."
