Behind the Press Story
On Creech-Jones Speech
LAKE SUCCESS. — Surpassing
the three rings of a certain widely
advertised beer, the United Na
tions performs in at least twice
that number.
The Palestine ring is prominent
ly in view. It promises to become
even more so. Britain’s surface
offer to end the Mandate and
withdraw her troops from Pales
tine started things off. Those who
warned that the proposal contains
booby traps had only to point to
the jubilation it caused among the
Arab representatives. Immediate
ly after Colonial Secretary Arthur
Creech-Jones read the statement
to the UN Palestine Committee,
smiles wreathed the faces of the
Arab delegates,
When It was suggested to a Brit
ish spokesman, that a press con
ference by Creeeh-Jones would be
In order, to help clarify the decla
ration, the reaction was: this is
so clear and to the point that it
does not require any amplifica
tion. That makes it a rare docu
ment, considering that Foreign Of
fice draftsmen—and not alone the
British—dip their pens in fog,
smog and oil to write about Pal
estine.
In the final act, the decision
will be taken by vote of all the
members of the UN. The Arab
voting strength has been increased
by the admission of Yemen and
Pakistan. Their entrance was
somewhat overshadowed by coin-

ciding with the first game of the
World Series. Grave diplomatic
correspondents as well as tele
graph operators massed before the
television sets in the press bar.
Across the hall the General As
sembly sometimes slid, sometimes
slud, as Dizzy Dean would say,
from one rocky base to another.
How does a reporter get from
base to base to story at an inter
national gathering of this sort?
He sticks like a mother hen to
the meetings of the Palestine Com
mittee, closely follows its formal
proceedings: circulates among the
delegates, in their lounge; grabs
their coattails in corridors and
even up to the door of the retiring
room, to get their reaction, com
ment, opinion, either for quota
tion or for anonymous attribution.
He even, when possible, wangles
rides back to New York from
Flushing Meadows or Lake Suc
cess. in a delegate’s car. This
reached such a point, at one ses
sion of the UN, that the Secretar
iat posted a notice in the press
room asking reporters to cease in
flicting themselves on delegates,
or steps would have to be taken.
The next day a parallel an
nouncement by the press corps
called for measures to prevent the
delegates from forcing their opin
ions on the press.
For the first few weeks of its
existence, the Palestine Commit
tee suffered from a severe lack of
opinion. The only one who would
express themselves were the Jews
and the Arabs. The big powers
were tight-lipped. Most of the
other members played a waiting
game until their cue came from
the United States and Great Bri
tain."
There was considerable raising
of eyebrows when an Australian,
Minister of External Affairs Her
bert V. Evatt, was elected chair*
man of the Palestine Committee.
A member of the British Empire,
Australia can hardly fail to be in
fluenced by the British viewpoint.
Dr. Evatt’s powers of objectivity
will be tested when debate warms
up.
Anti-Semitism Increasing in Austria After
Expose of Medical Experiments on Children
VIENNA, (JTA) — Anti-Semi
tic propaganda in Vienna has in
creased sharply since the expose of
unauthorized operations and medi
cal experiments on Jewish refugee
children by a doctor at the Stein-
hof Hospital here. Both officials
and ordinary citizens have been
accusing the Jews of attempting to
destroy Austria by '’lying’’ about
Austrian doctors.
Apparently influenced by the
anti-Jewish atmosphere, Mayor
Theodor Koerner has cancelled a
conference with David Brill, presi
dent of the Vienna Jewish Com
munity, on the question of housing
for Jewish repatriates, declaring
that this was an “unfavorable
time" to discuss the matter.
Meanwhile, the Austrian au
thorities have tightened the bor
der controls aimed at keeping out
Jewish refugees from Rumania,
citing an old British protest
against it and a Russian order pro
hibiting the movement of refugees
through their zone of Austria.
In the past, the Russian order has
been more honored in the breach
than in the observance, with the
Russian authorities generally ex
hibiting no concern at the move
ment of Jews through their terri
tory. A protest to Interior Min
istry Oskar Helmer brought a de
nial that the government had ord
ered Jews turned back at the fron
tier, and the following day some
200 Rumanian Jews arrived here.
Harold Trobe, Joint Distribu
tion Committee director in Aus
tria, has released a statement that
a medical inquiry commission
w hich investigated J D. C. charges
against the Austrian doctor and
substantiated all the facts as pre
sented by the relief agency. He
pointed out that the J. D. C. had
at no time labelled the experiments
an atrocity nor charged that the
malpractices had occurred for ra
cial reasns.
The J. D. C. director also asster-
ed that the Austrian Government
