He
Knew
English
by David Schwartz
1 was looking through a diction
ary the other day when I noticed a
friend of mine smiling at me. My
friend, Schmcrel. is some sort of a
jolly cynic and by the grin on his
face, I knew something was com
ing.
"I bet," I said, trying to antici
pate him, "that you are going to
tell me the story about the woman
who returned the dictionary to the
library, saying, 'it is all right, but
it's got too many short stories'.”
"No.” said Schmerel, "I wasn't
going to tell you that story at all, I
was just going to ask you why you
wanted to bother with the dic
tionary."
"Oh, l see,” I said, "you are one
of those fellows who say 'darf man
knenen English?' Well, it can't
hurt you anyway.”
"No?” queried Schmerel, "Be
lieve me, more people are hurt by
English than by falling roofs. It
can be worse than rheumatism."
“How do you figure that out?" I
said.
"Let me tell you a story,” said
Schmerel. "Did you ever hear of
Alexander Harkavy?"
"Sure," I replied, "he's the man
who compiled the Yiddish-English
dictionary, also the Hebrcw-Eng-
lish dictionary and various other
dictionaries, and wrote very
learned treatises on language."
"That's right," said Schmerel,"
and since you know about him. you
will appreciate this all the more.
You know about his work, but I
knew Harkavy."
"To begin from the commence
ment," said Schmerel. "Harkavy
came over here in his late teens.
He was one of those young Rus
sian Jews wVio in the eighties
dreamed fantastic dreams of set
ting up cooperative colonies in
America. There was a whole
movement of these people . .
"Yes,” I interrupted. "I have read
about them. In America. Michael
Heilprin was one of those who
tried to help them. They estab
lished colonies in New Jersey. Con
necticut. North Dakota."
"Their first colony in Amer
ica was called Sholem," resumed
Schmerel.
"Same name as Salem. Very
much in the style of the early Puri
tans,” I said.
"Yes,” said Schmerel. "but soon
instead of Sholem it was Olav
Hashalom. if you get what I mean.
