New Year Greeting
By Rabbi Jacob M. Rothschild
THE TEMPLE
There has always been a striking difference be
tween the observance of our Jewish New Year and
the manner in which we greet the secular year. The

One takes for granted that the
new year will merit such unre-

secular holiday, all we seek is a
“Happy New Year.” But on Rosh

as our goal.

Never, in fact, have we been more j odds to create a land of peace and
freedom. There is hatred in the
world, but God lives in the heart
of every man who loves his
brother, in every family tightly
knit by bonds of sacrifice and de-
v otlon.
On the eve of this New Year,
we must not see only the evil. We
dare not give way to hopelessness
and despair. \ challenge greets

discouraged about the future than
at this very moment in history.
To greet another year with unre
strained joy would be to ignore
all the clear signposts of danger,
all the insecurity we feel, all the
unhappiness so apparent in the
world. Indeed, our task on this
New Year is to find some little
cause for quiet confidence, to
catch the rays of some bright sun
of iiopg shining faintly through
the forboding gloom of world
destruction.
Many centuries ago, Isaiah re
garded ihe people of his world—
and saw them discouraged, un
happy, fearful and insecure. In
unforgetable words, he summed
them up by saying: “The whole
head is, sick; the whole heart
faint.’’ So it is with us. Headsick
and faint of heart, we greet the
future with wholesome dread- Yet

B’NAI B’RITH was founded by Americans of the Jewish
faith more than a century ago, as a fraternal and
service organization devoted to humanitarian
works in behalf of its members. Jewry and people
of all faiths.
In that tradition, B’nai B’rith takes this occasion to wish
for all mankind a year of prosperity in the things
of the spirit—contentment, brotherhood, and,
above all, the blessings of Peace.

Am berg notorious Swedish anti-
Semite, was recently fined 500
kroner for publishing and distri
buting anti-Jewish pamphlets. He
still faces a trial on charges of
having traveled from Sweden to
France without a passport.
After he heard the sentence,
Aberg announced that he will
continue his activities. During the
court recess before he was sen
tenced, the anti-Semite handed
out his hate propaganda in the
anteroom of the court. There is
considerable ill feeling toward
Aberg because people believe’that
the material which he mails
