a happy NEW YEAR
1 94 8 -5 709
As we enter upon a Ne«v
Year, may we be conscious of
its unique place in the mark
ing of time. Its character and
meaning have little in com
mon with the observance of
the first day of the solar
year.
Tins day is one of spiritual
import. The Shofar sounds
call not to festive rejoicings
hut to self-examination, re
pentance and the dignity of
the individual soul.lt reminds
man of his God given ability
to mend his ways. Let him he
conscious of his iransgres-
sions in the past year, of his
offenses against God and man
and with firmness of heart,
mind and spirit turn aside
from the errors of his ways.
Open before God, said the
Rabbis of old, lies the spirit
ual ledger of each of us. As
He is merciful, He does not
pass judgment on this day. A
respite of ten days is granted
lor amendment of the records
before the books are closed
and judgment rendered on
the Day of Atonement.
Would that the entire world
might take to heart this mes
sage. Many have been the

heart-aches and the sorrows,,
the hatreds and the fears iu-
the year that have gone. Even’
now, dread and uncertainty
envelop the earth with mists
of bigotry, intolerance, hatred
and injustice. May the shofar
sounds be heard throughout
the vvorld and dispel these
mists and shadows—Interna
tional, National and Indivi
dual and usher in a year of
Peace and Happiness to all.
In the thought and language
of the Synagogue, my prayer
for all is that you be written
and sealed in the BOOK OF
THE LIVING for a bright
and happy New Year.
