AMSTERDAM, (JTA )— Anti-
Semitism was condemned oy a
number of speakers at the meet
ing here recently of the World
Conference of Churches. The for
mation of the state of Israel and
its relationship to the problem of
anti-Semitism and the Christian
world was also reviewed by sev
eral church leaders and a special
sub-committee on Israel has been
formed.
Many of the speakers at the
sessions stressed that a sense of
respect for and a feeling of guilt
towards the Jews permeated the
Christian world as a result of the
tragic annihilation of large Jew
ish communities in Europe. Sev
eral of the ecclesiastical leaders
have said that the conference will

strife over Israel.
Dr. Conrad Hoffman, secretary
at least the partial guilt of the
Christian churches for the racial
of the church and Israel sub
committee, said: "We of the
Christian Church must feel our
guilt in the fact that we have
failed to solve the problem of an
ti-Semitism.’’ Dr Hoffman said:
“Christendom failed to prevent
the annihilation of 6,000,000 Jews
by Hitler—a third of the entire
Jewish people." He added: “V*. e
failed lo provide any plans for
the rescue of the Jews from Hit
ler. We thereby provided the
present pressure on Palestine."
Bishop A. Dunn pf the Episco
pal Church of America said that
the political reality of Israel will
confuse Christian worship because
‘‘Israel” now means something
new and different from what is
meant in the Bible. Since Israel
became a state, Bishop Dunn add
ed, the Christian approach to the
Jews has become a political prob
lem of considerable dimensions.

Vain are Looks
A Yeshiva bachur w'as engaged j
to be married to a very unattrac- j
live damsel. He didn't want to I
marry the girl, but his papa told
him he must. So the Talmud stu
dent w'ent to the rabbi to register I
his complaint.
The rabbi thought it over and
said to the young Talmud student, j
"Just think, what difference does
it make whether she is ugly or j
not? All day you will be in the
synagogue studying, so you won't
look at her anyway. At night,
when you sleep in the dark, you
can’t look at her either. At your
leisure, when you go out walking,
you won't look at her. So what’s
the difference how she looks?"
