Visitor to Atlanta Is Pioneer Zionist; Began
Interest in Rumania Before Coming to Canada
BY DAVID ABROMOWITZ
Mr. Abromowitz, with his wife, is visiting his daughter Dr.
Rose Lahman and son-in-law, Harry Lahtnan, over the holi
days. He is a resident of Toronto and contributed the inter
esting “Don’t Consult the Dictionary” in the last two issues of
(>ur magazine supplement. Below briefly is his “Half Century
in Retrospect” and a rep'ica of ; n early Zionist membership
card he stil! treasures.— THE EDITOR.

As my mind’s eye
travels back half-a-
century to the unfor
gettable romantic per
iod of Hert/.l Zionism,
the figure that emer
ges most vividly in my
memory is that of my
uncle, Jacob Banff, a
happy mixture of old
orthodoxy and mod
ernism. (He was a
Rabbi’s son).
A compelling figure
of almost saintly ap
pearance,—he was the
great influence of my
life. 1 see myself a
young lad of 14 in my
native Bucharest, ’
Roumania. My uncle’s
eyes are lit with an
inner glow, he speaks
enthusiastically of the
new messianic hope of return to j
Zion, of the new leader that ap- |
pea red in Israel and of the great |
assembly in Basle, the first Zion
ist Congress that had just closed,
and the young lad listens atten
tively, his youthful soul stirred to
its inmost depths.
My unflagging adherence to the
movement dates back to that
early event. I treasure as heir
looms my receipts for membership
dues dating back to that period of
1897, but the one best preserved
is for the year 1903 which reads:

this modest contribution may have
played its little part in hastening
the realization of that noble
dream, now a positive reality.
Some five years later, in Sep
tember of 1903, the immigrant
boy finds himself in Toronto,
Canada, and soon joins the B’nai
Zion Association, the first Zionist
Society in this country. Later I
had the distinction of being elect
ed President of that Society, an
honor I value even more now that
Zionism attained its crowning
achievement in the State of Is
rael.
I had the satisfaction of active
participation in all Zionist cam
paigns of half a century, but, sig
nificantly enough, I was happy to
note the half-century mark with
my chairmanship of the J- N. F.
Tishah B’Ab campaign this year.
Now a new and glorious chapter
opens for all of us but the time
to relax is not yet.
