Ford Motor Co. in Iraq for 18
years, was tried by a military
court and sentenced to death and •
payment of a fine equivalent to j
about $20,000,000. The death sen- J
tence was subject to review by i
King Feisal, who approved the j

THE POLITICAL POT
Watch for President Tru- j
man’s statement on Palestine 1
in the middle of October. . . .
He will make this statement in
New York and will openlv
commit himself to do jure rec
ognition of Israel. ... It seems
that Truman was not consulted
by Secretary of State Marshall
on the latter's announcement
that the United States fully
backs Bernadotte’s recommen
dations on Palestine. ... All
indications point to the fact
that during the last weeks the
State Department has “isolat
ed” Truman from the Palestine
issue. . . . State Department of
ficials on the lower levels arc
still discussing Palestine with
representatives of Jewish
groups. . . Not so Acting Sec
retary Lovett. . . .
Now that the Palestine qties-
tion will not come up before
the U. N. Political Committee
in Paris for at least a month,
the entire issue may assume a
new turn. ... 11 all depends on
the atmosphere at. the United
Nations after the Political Com
mittee discusses the question
of control of atomic energy and
thcSovict proposal lor a world
wide reduction in armaments.
. . . Whatever the outcome of
the fight on major issues be
tween the USSR and the dem
ocratic powers at the United
Nations, Israel will continue to '
place its trust in the United
Nations. . . . This will be true
even if the Soviets should |
step out of the world family of
nations. . . .
The Israeli Government real- |
izes the U. N. is the “father”
of the Jewish State, notwith- j
standing the fact that present I
British-American policy at the
General Assembly to curtail j
the territorial and economic ]
achievements of Israel. . . . j
On the other hand, the Arab
delegations now hope that the j
greater the East-West tension .
grows, the greater will be the j
concessions which the demo
cratic powers will be ready to
make to the Arab world, in or
der to strengthen their strate
gic position in Arab countries.

JEWISH AFFAIRS
The next General Assembly
of the Council of Jewish Fed
erations and Welfare Funds
will be held in Philadelphia in
the middle of January. ... It
will be one of the most im
portant Jewish gatherings
since the relationship between
fund-raising organizations and
the Federations will be dis
cussed. . . .
Harold Glasser, director of
the Institute on Overseas Stud
ies of the Council of Jewish
Federations and Welfare
Funds, suggests that instead of
the International Refugee Or
ganization supplementing the
work of voluntary Jewish re
lief agencies in the DP camps,
tiie reverse should be the case.
There is no reason, he says,
why the I.R.O. should have
wound up the fiscal year 1947-
48 with an approximate $20-30
million surplus. ... A total of
Hate Decree
Out in Bolivia
NEW YORK. Oct. 1. i.JTAl —
President Enrique Hertzog of Bo
livia today informed Dr. Stephen
S. Wise, president of the World
Jewish Congress, that the Boliv
ian Government has revoked a
decree which threatened the livi-
hood of many Jews now resident
m that country.
The measure, which was direct
ed against “Semitic” immigrants
who arrived in Bolivia since 1987, |
authorized a special investigation I
of their financial assets. Dr. Wise,
in a cable to the Bolivian Presi
dent charged that the Bolivian
Chamber of Commerce and the
Banco Centrale we're denying im
port licenses and facilities to Jews
on the basis of the discriminatory
decree. The reply received by him
today from President Hertzog
said: “The Government of Bolivia,
in consideration for the reasons
given in your cable, revoxes thd
decree in question,"
about SI20 million was avail- j
able to the I.R.O. for that year, j
... In the light of the facts j
which he secured during a re- !
cent study in the camps for 1
displaced Jews, Glasser made ;
a number of interesting recom- i
mendations. . . ,
They provide 1. That the
Jewish overseas agencies im
mediately formulate a pro
gram for obtaining much lar
ger support from the I.R.O- for i
the care, maintenance and re
settlement of the displaced
Jews. ... 2. That the Jewish
agencies in the U. S. parallel
these efforts by urging tee
State Department to bring
pressure on the I.R.O. for the
same end. ... 3. That Con
gress and the executive depart
ments be urged to make ap
propriations to tne I.R.O to
Fr'd-y, October 8, 1948
finance resettlement projects
in Israel. ... 4. That the Is
raeli Government in coopera
tion with the I.R.O., the U. S.
Army, the DP organizations,
and the Jewish voluntary
agencies, formulate a program
for closing the DP camps. . . .
This program shall be co-ordi
nated with the economic needs
and 3bsorpti\ e capacities of
Israel and should be financed
by the I.R.O.
