son Of Our Gladness."
Coming as it does after the
solemn days of Rosh Hoshana
and Yom Kippuf, the holiday
underscores as important char
acteristic of our faith. The
ultimate aim of Judaism is
joyous living. In the words of
a Sage, “the essence of our
whole Torah is contained in
these three things: Reverence.
Love, Joy. They are the way
to bring us near to God.”
The Succah
“The fifteenth day of tiiis
seventh montn (Tishri) is the
Feast of Tabernacles for seven
days unto the Lord.’’ Thus
reads the biblical command
for the observance of this fes
tival. Our eating or dwelling
in booths for seven days is
further explained, “that your
generation may know that I
made the children of Israel to
dwell in booths when I brought
them out of the land of Egypt.”
Our ancient teachers find
two implied meanings in this
account of the booths; one
speaks of the protective glory
of God which sheltered them
during their journey in the
desert. The Succah is thus a
symbol of divine protection
which we enjoy. The other
stresses the historic signifi
cance of the Succah. The Suc-
cah reminds us of the tents
which the children of Israel
actually built for themselves
upon their departure from
Egypt. Maimonides finds the
two festivals, Passover and
Succos, linked by one basic
teaching, ‘'The two festivals,
Passover and the Feast of Ta
bernacles, imply also the
teaching of certain truths and
certain moral lessons. The
moral lesson derived from
these feasts is this; man ought
to remember his evil days in
his days of prosperity. He will
thereby be induced to thank
God repeatedly, to lead a mod
est and humble life. . . . We
leave our houses on Succos in
order to dwell in tabernacles
as inhabitants of deserts do
that are in want of comfort.
We shall therefore remember
that this has once been our
condition . . . although we
dwell in elegant houses in the
best and most fertile land by
the kindness of God . • .”
The Four Plants
\ est season brings. According
to Maimonides they are also
“symbolic expressions of our
rejoicing that the Israelites'
exchanged the wilderness (‘no
place of seed or of figs or of
vines . . .’) for a country full
of fruit trees and rivers.’’
The Esrog is a fruit which
possesses both fragrance and
food quality; the palm branch
bears the date which is edible
but is not fragrant; the myrtle
has fragrance but no fruit; the
willow has neither fruit nor
fragrance. In similar fashion
there are people who possesses
learning and fine qualities;
others who are learned but
fail to practice the good life; a
third group includes those wno
are worthy in conduct though
ignorant of knowledge; a
fourth category consists of
those who are neither learned
nor virtuous. What shall be
done with those who are seem
ingly unworthy? “No group
should be banned or scorned,”
is the divine teaching. “Let
them be united. The shortcom
ing of one will be compensated
for by the virtues of the other.
Together they will prove them
selves productive of noble com
munity life.”
