Marriage Registrars Prompt
Walk-Out of British Liberals
LONDON, (JTA)—A split has
occured in the Jewish community
here following a sharp difference
of opinion between representa
tives of the Orthodox and Liberal
religious groups within the Board
of Deputies of British Jews.
The conflict arose over a reso
lution which would have empow
ered the president of the board to
appoint marriage registrars for
Liberal synagogues, with the co
operation of the authorities of
such congregations. The motion
was defeated on the grounds that
the Board of Deputies charter
only recognizes Orthodox Judaism
and that therefore marriage reg
istrars may be appointed only by
ecclesiastical authorities — the
Chief Rabbi and the Beth Din.
The Liberals on the Board
walked out of the meeting imme
diately after the vq|e, and it is
believed that they are planning to
leave the organization and estab
lish a separate body of their own.
The issue is still not clearly crys
tallized and the Liberals are ex
pected to abstain in the forthcom
ing elections for members of the
Board.
A. F. Brotman, secretary of the
Board of Deputies, left here this
week for New York to consult
with leaders of Jewish organiza
tions in the United States on
questions dealing with the U. N.
Human Rights Commission.
JDC and IRO Press Efforts
To Save 4,000 in Shanghai
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Efforts to
evacuate some 4,000 Jewish refu
gees trapped in Shanghai are be
ing pressed by the Joint Distri
bution Committee and the Inter
national Refugee Organization, it
was reported this week by J. D.
C. officials here. J. D. C.’s director
in Shanghai, Adolph C. Glassgold,
is standing by in the beleaguered
city making every effort to ac
complish the removal of the refu
gee group, the officials said.
In the last four months more
than 4,100 Jews have been evacu- !
ated from Shanghai, J. D. C. offi
cials pointed out. In addition, per- j
mission has been obtained by the |
J D. C. to evacuate 500 refugees '
caught in Communist-held teVri- j
tory in the North, but the break- j
down in transportation facilities j
to Shanghai from Tientsin, Peip
ing and other cities has prevented
their movement thus far.
A most serious problem con- j
fronting the J. D. C. in Shanghai, |
agency spokesmen pointed out, is |
a group of about 400 seriously ill |
or extremely aged Jews in Shan- I
ghai, who can hardly face the
rigors of travel, and may continue
to need on-the-spot aid for some
years to come.
Atlanta's Jewish community literally seethed with action
this past week as workers of the Trade & Industry Division
stepped their contacts for the Welfare Fund campaign into
high gear.
In the various groups of the T. & I. Division, men held
meetings, luncheons, phone con- present made his pledge. The
ferences, distributed cards, made
reports and in general spurred on
their part in the drive for the $1,»
150,000 goal.
Here are quick glimpses of a
few of the T. & I. highlights:
Assignment meetings were held
by Max Kuniansky in the Con
struction Industry, and Robert
Haber in the Automotive Indus
try. Their trade committees took
the cards and are actively solicit
ing. The Paper and Paper Pro
ducts group sparked by Morton
L. Weiss and Arthur L. Harris, is
doing an outstanding job. Every
card reported to-date has been
either an increase or the same as
last year.

BY MILTON FRIEDMAN
An outspoken enemy of the Jewish people has
emerged in Washington in the person of Rep. Ed
Gossett, a Democratic member of Congress from
Wichita Falls, Texas.
Washington Jews are still
seething with indignation over
a harangue delivered by Gos
sett on April 23 to the receptive
ears of the ladies of the Wash
ington Chapter of the American
Association of University Wo
men. Gossett attacked tha
Jews, defended the Germans,
and got a big hand.
This was Gossett’s debut. He had previously.
passed a few public anti-Semitim remarks as a
member of the llouse Irtimigration subcommittee
considering DP legislation, and made some ques
tionable entries in the Congressional Record. But
April 23 was his day to howl.
Ho.neless Jews coming to the United States as
DP’s are “an injection of virus in our national
bloodstream which is already becoming polluted,”
Gossett told the ladies of the AAUW. He also
“warned” them that “you can’t discuss the Jewish
angle without being accused of anti-Semitism.”
And then he proceeded to make his anti-Semitic
remarks. He was enthusiastically applauded.
Gossett charged that many Russian and Polish
Jews in the DP camps had never been persecuted
and could have remained comfortably in their
homes in Eastern Europe. Capitalizing on current
public opinion regarding Russia, Gossett singled
out Russian Jews as being especially undesirable.
Gossett said American Jews had “connived” to
bring about United States support of Israel. He
alaimed that “800,000 Arabs have been displaced;
and 300 or 400 Arabs are dying every day and
they (the Jews) are not crying about them.”
Of Jewish DP’s he stated: “They are people
who are not seeking to do honest work and are
people who we would be better off without.” He
said he would prefer to bring to this country
“good German folks who are not afraid of physical
work.” The Germans, he said, are of better stock”
than “the dregs of the DP camps.”
Specific charges of destruction and sabotage by
Jewish DP’s made in the Gossett speech have
been contradicted. The U. S. Army and Congress
men who served with Gossett on the immigration
sub-committee said his statement about the de
struction by Jews of their barracks at the Zeil-
sheim cgmp in Germany was “news” to them.
They said they knew of no such incident. An
Army spokesman said that the Zeilsheim Jews
were known by the military command in Ger
many as “especially cooperative.”
Gossett made other pro-German and anti-
Jewish references. He also hiade a reference to
the ladies of the AAUW. He said it gave him
“great pleasure to address the intelligentsia.”
They bdafried.
It has been said that anti-Semitism breeds on
ignorance, among the uneducated. Surely, the
American Association of University Women can
hardly be acclised of ignorance. Its members in
clude public school and university teachers and
other professional women of the highest category.
The Washington chapter of this organization,
however, seemed not to mind Gossett’s remarks
and innuendos.
Not one of the more than 100 university grad
uates present got up to question any phase of
Gosset’s attack on the Jews. There were quite a
number of questions about what could be done to
help the “poor German expellees” (Germans
kicked out of Eastern European countries where
many of them operated for Hitler as a fifth
column).
Some of the ladies nodded their heads in agree
ment throughout the speech. All applauded. None
seemed in the least disturbed.
As Gossett made his way out of the meeting
■hall, a gushing feminine mob surrounded him.
“Mr. Congressman, I know every word you said
was the gospel truth.” “Thank you for the fine
talk.” “It was certainly a pleasure to hear some
one with the courage to speak the truth.” “Oh, I
thought he was simply marvelous.”
which was named for him. He
was buried in a temporary ceme
tery in a metal coffin.
Chief Rabbis Tssac Herzog, and
Ben Zion Uziel, as well as several
members of the Jewish Agency
executive, came to Rabbi Berlin’s
home soon after his collapse to
pay their last respects to him. A
special Mizrachi committee, which
also included the two Israeli Chief
Rabbis, made the funeral arrange
ments. The Ministry of Religion,
in deference to Rabbi Berlin’s
memory, ordered that no music be
played the day he was buried.
Several members of the Israeli
Cabinet came here to participate
in the funeral. Rabbi Berlin left
