Anti-Mask Bill-Front or Progress?
Our readers will join us in welcoming the anti-mask
bill which Atlanta’s City Council unanimously passed
earlier this week.
It is indeed a sign of progress, even in a community
which has had no masked demonstration within the last
decade.
It is to be hoped that passage of this measure is a sin
cere attempt to ban the Klan and not, as suspefcted, a pre
election maneuver.
This sincerity remains to be proven by the next step
taken by City Council to impement the fan fare with
which the measure zipped through channels. This step is
to purge the city government and the Police Depart
ment, especially, of its Klan-ridden membership. Doubt
lessly one procedure would be to require an oath similar
to the current loyalty statement aimed at subversive
Communist organizations. Although, for that matter,
when policemen take their original oath of office swear
ing to uphold the Constitution of the United States, they
automatically bar themselves from affiliation with
any un-American organization such as the Klan. City
Council could simply demand that this original oath be
fulfilled.
We hope Atlanta’s City Council will not recline upon
the laurels which have come already to them in such
profusion for passing the measure and will press forward
to put their purported reason for the bill into action.
Otherwise, the bill will remain—just one for the record,
meaningless and empty, devoid of the progress which
could acrue to Council’s distinction by going forward.

Fund Campaign
Each year, members of A. Z. A.
518 hold an elaborate banquet
and dance to which they invite
their best girl friends to join in
an evening of dancing and mer
rymaking.
There will be dancing and mer
rymaking this year but when the
group gathers at the Mayfair Club
Sunday evening, May 15, the af
fair will be on an altogether dif
ferent—and modest scale.
Reason is that the members are
donating the money they would
ordinarily spend for food and
flowers to the 1949 Exodus Cam
paign of the Atlanta Jewish Wel
fare Fund.
The sacrificial gesture may
mean tightening up belts a notch
for the festivities, but the mem
bers reason they can stand the in
convenience and get a genuine
thrill out of helping those really
in need.
