“What Is Torah” Cantata, Installation
Features Hadassah Annual Meet May 23
Atlanta Hadassah will hold its
annual meeting at the luncheon at
the Mayfair Club at 12:30 p. m.
Monday, May 23.
Mrs. Joe Benamy will be in
stalled as president for her second
term. Mrs. J. J. Heilman, pioneer
member of the organization, will
preside at the installation.
Another feature of the meeting
will be a cantata, “What Is Torah”
under the direction of Mrs. Her
bert R. Karp who is also soloist
in the production.
This is the first time that this
cantata has been presented by a
Hadassah group. It was first pre
sented by the Society for the Ad
vancement of Judaism in New
York City in 1942 during the fes
tival of Shuvoth, and is particu
larly appropriate at this time. It

Meeting Sunday
Final breakfast meeting of the
Brotherhood of the Shearith Is
rael Synagogue will be held at
10:15 a. m. Sunday, May 15, in the
Vestry Rooms.
Dr. Hyman S. Zimmerman,
president, urges all members to
be present to plan for the coming
season and the extra curricular
activities that will be conducted
in the Synagogue’s new educa
tional building on University

The system of Hebrew educa
tion in the orient will be depicted
through a film. For breakfast res

MRS. JOE BENAMY
contains music adapted from
Jewish, religious and folk themes,
and is sung in English, Hebrew
and Yiddish.
Members of the cast, together
with the director, the general
chairman, Mrs. J. Friedman, and
the accompanist, Mrs. Herbert
Taylor, are working diligently to
make this an outstanding occasion.

Meets Monday
At Standard Club
Annual meeting of the Atlanta
Section, Council of Jewish Wo
men, will be held at 12:30 p. m.
Monday, May 16, at the Standard
Club.
A luncheon will precede the
program and immediately follow
ing the installation of new officers
and board members will take
place.
The program, entitled “S. S.
Council-Fore,” will be a revue in
which a number of members of
Council have a part. The style of
Gilbert and Sullivan, of comic
opera fame, will be used.
Mrs. Miles Hess and Mrs. Her
bert Cohen will act as hostesses
and a door prize will be given.
Reservations are being accepted
by Mrs. Jack Berman and Mrs.
Henry Simmons.
Young Judaeans
To Mark Israel
Independence
“Youth Seeks an Answer” is the
title of the symposium to be led
at the assembly of the AA Sunday
School Sunday morning, May 15,
1949, in conjunction with an Is
raeli Birthday celebration put on
by Atlanta Young Judaea.
In honor of the first anniver
sary of the establishment of the
world’s newest and smallest de
mocracy, approximately fifteen
members of Atlanta Young Ju
daean clubs will take part in a
vivid and illustrative program.
The forum will entail a discus-
cussion of Jewish Youth organiza
tions, their aim and purpose on
the American scene along with
seeking an answer for the future
of American Jewish Youth.

stalled for her second term as
president by the Atlanta Mizrachi

agogue at 12:30 p. m. Tuesday,
May 17.
Rabbi Joseph Cohen will install
Mrs. Friedman and the following
newly elected officers: Mrs. A.
Auerbach and Mrs. Herbert Saul,
vice presidents; Mrs. Saul Gray,
recording secretary; Mrs. L. Gold-
wasser, corresponding secretary;
Mrs. P. S. Clein, treasurer; Mrs.
A. Frankel, parliamentarian.
Mrs. Gray, chairman, has ar
ranged the program. Reservations

Emory Council
Elects Block
Pro-Tem Chief
Alvin Lee Block, Tau Epsilon
Phi, of Orlando, was recently
elected president pro-tern of the
Emory University student body.
Upon resignation of the former
president, he was elected by a
special vote of the student*coun
cil.
Active in every major student
activity on the campus, the new
student body head is the president
of Alpha Epsilon Upsilon, honor
ary society for scholarship, and a
member of Eta Sigma Psi, honor
ary society for activities. He has
also served on the executive coun
cil of the Emory Christian Asso
ciation, served on the Inter-fra
ternity Council and was a member
of the winning team in the recent
Emory University Debate Forum.
He will serve in this capacity
until Dooley’s Frolics in May.
