Georgia University Hillel
Lists Student Honor Winners

proval of all those present at Hil
lers Annual Award Night, on
Sunday evening. May 15, Charles
Stein was awarded the Walter I.
Ehrenreich Trophy as the out
standing Jewish student on the

Charlie has been active not only
at the Hillel Foundation, as chair
man of our Executive Council, co-
chairman of the United Jewish
Appeal Drive, and in numerous
similar capacities, but he has held
positions of importance and re
sponsibility in many other cam
pus organizations. He was one of
the strongest influences in the U
of Georgia Religious Leaders
Council, is a member of Thalian
Blackfriars, served as president of
Biftad, was a member of the “X
Club, was Master of the Alpha
Epsilon Pi fraternity, etc., etc
During the past year, he has also
been president of the Southeastern
Region of Hillel, in which capa
city he originated the plan for
regional summer institutes which
the national organization is now
working on developing.
At the same time it was an
nounced by Rabbi Glasner that
Arthur Cohen had been awarded
the national Hillel Honor Society
Gold Key. Artie also has been
active in a wide variety of campus
organizations. He was recently
initiated into Thalian-Blackfriars
has been active with the Univer
sity of Georgia Religious Associa
tion, and has been deeply inter
ested in the Student World Fed
eralist Organization. His achieve
ments in reference to Hillel, how
ever, have been particularly out
standing. As chairman of the In
ter-Faith committee, Artie initiat
ed the project in which the other
religious organizations later join
ed, of donating important books of
religious interest to the Univer
sity Library in memory of the
Four Chaplains during Brother
hood Week. He also worked inten
sively for I. Z. F. A., the Inter-
Faith Seder, the Hebrew classes
and other Hillel functions. Re
cently, the Hillel Executive Coun
cil elected Artie treasurer for the
coming year.
Elected to the Hillel Honor So
ciety of the University of Georgia
were Sonya Abelson of Atlanta;
Marianne Cohn of Athens; Leon
Epstein of Atlanta; Jerry Fields
of Atlanta; Jackie Goldberg Birm
ingham; Elaine Peters and George
Peters, both of Athens; and
Charles Stein of Atlanta. These
people were awarded the Silver
Key of the Honor Society. Elec
tion to the Honor Society is made
on the basis of outstanding service
to Hillel over an extended period
of time (at least one full school
year) and over a broad area of
activity. -
Special book prizes for unusual
accomplishment were awarded to
Jack Steinberg of Augusta; Mar
vin Nodvin of Savannah; Erica
Meyer of Atlanta; Sara Dessauer
of Augusta; Barry Blitzer of New
York and Frieda Levin of Nash
ville, Ga. Book prizes were also
sent to the following students who
have left school but who had done
noteworthy work during the first
quarter of this school year; Harold
Berkman, A1 Silverman, Marvin
Weintraub, all of New York and
Betty Levy of Birmingham.
Also elected to the Hillel Honor
Society was Professor Paul E.
Pfuetze, Head of the Philosophy
Department. His award was pre
sented by Milton Lesser of Athens,
who is also a member of the Hillel
Honor Sotiety. A Christian clergy
man, Dr. Pfuetze introduced the
idea of the Inter-Faith Seder and
the suggestions for the memorial
library collection. He delivered
an inspiring lecture in the Hillel
series on “Looking Toward Mar
riage.” He has been a good friend
to Hillel in many ways, both be
fore and since coming to the Uni
versity of Georgia.
