ABOUT SPORTS * Mike eu
Boxing, or “prize fighting,” as it
is commonly known, to one of the
world’s foremost sports. Some
people believe that in order to be
a boxer one must be able to stand
in an inclosed space and beat his
opponent into insensibility—or
vice versa. How wrong they are.
A good boxer must be mentally
alert, physically fit and trained to

perfection. He must watch his
stance, his legwork, timing and
coordination. He must be able to
size his opponent up. Pick out the
other's weaknesses and stay away
from being punished or hurt in
any way. Many of the world’s
greatest boxers were Jewish. The
art of self-defense is very neces
sary and useful to the up and
coming youngster. It gives him a
sense of pride and strength, makes
him able to defend himself when
necessary and also builds him up
physically.
Benny Leonard, the former un
defeated world’s lightweight
champion, sometimes referred to
as the “Gentleman Fox,” had
none of the pug markings asso
ciated with the stereotype of
fighters. And yet in his ring
career, he was unbeatable. He won
practically all his bouts scientifi
cally, cleverly maneuvering his
opponents into revealing their
weakness and then finishing them
off at will. He was lauded by
sports writers the world over as
one of the greatest boxers the
world over as one of the greatest
boxers the world has ever known,
sincerely respected because of his
clean living and his Jewishness.
Barney Ross, former welter
weight champion of the world and

Asher Benator of Atlanta, wear
ing the colors of the Jewish Edu
cational Alliance, recently won the
Georgia Golden Gloves champion
ship. We are all very proud of this
youngster who has proven his
worth. He has promise of being
a great fighter.
He will be seen in action Sun
day, June 5, along \vith other
athletes being trained at the Al

Alas and alack for a certain j
horse named Palestinian—the j
Jewish named and owned race j
horse. He just missed again in the i
Preakness. He was coming on j
gaining ground in his last three !
big races. I don’t think an extra I
sixteenth of a mile will bother i
this horse in the slightest. He is
very big for his age and strong
and dead game, but I believe he
requires an off track. He will
again meet the same company at
Belmont on June 11 for a mile and
a half test. My two bucks will be
on his nose. If it rains he may
rate an extra fifty cents.
