Knesset Approves
Israeli Austerity
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The Israeli
Parliament this week approved
the government-sponsored auster
ity program. The vote was 57
against 33, with many abstentions.
Dov Joseph, Minister of Food
and Supply, summing up the ar
guments in favor of the plan,
said that a total saving of 17,000,-
000 pounds—about $51,000,000—
annually will be achieved if the
austerity program is effected. He
emphasized that austerity is only
a part of the over-all government
program aimed at bringing down
the cost of living and consolidating
the Israeli currency.
