Out-of-Town Colleges Accepting Only
Two-Third of Applicants, Survey Shows
NEW YORK. (JTA)—Out-of-
town colleges and universities in i
the United States receive eleven
percent of their applications from
Jewish students and accord Jews
seven percent of their places in
freshrr.an classes, a survey con
ducted by the Elmo Roper organi
zation and financed by a grant
from the Anti-Defamation League
has revealed.
“The frequent charge made
against the colleges that they dis
criminate against Jewish students
seems to be proven, but only in
part and perhaps not nearly to the
extent which is frequently
charged,” the report said. While I
Jews "ultimately succeed in get- {
ting a chance at some kind of col- j
lege education as often as Pro- !
testants do,’' the report points j
out, they must try more colleges
in order to do it.
The report declared that “Jews
are a definitely disadvantaged
group when it comes to getting)
into college, but the situation is
complex, and cannot be described I
in the simple terms of general,
across-the-board, discrimination. I
A much larger proportion of Jew- j
ish high school seniors apply to
college than Protestants or Cath- j
dies, and the Jewish applicants
are heavily concentrated in the
geographic area of greatest over
all application pressure, the north
east. the survey said, adding that
the end results is that the “college
accepts not only a smaller abso
lute number of Jewish applicant.'
than non-Jewish, but also a small
er proportion of Jewish applica
tions than non-Jewish.”
N. Y. State Supreme Court Jus
tice Meier Steinbrink, chairman
of the A. D. L., commenting on
the report, said that it offered
“conclusive proof of the need for
a state university, bias-free and
open to accredited high schoo
graduates of New York State. The
only effective counterforce to the
private colleges which have sys
tematically barred Jews aud othe:
minorities,” he noted, “have beer
municipal and state colleges which
do not discriminate.”

AT THE LOW COST
OF AN EXTENSION TELEPHONE
Do you know you can have an exten
sion telephone in your home for only
a few cents per day?
The cost is mighty small when you
consider the many advantages an ex
tension telephone provides for the
home and family. It saves time and
steps, affords privacy on the telephone,
protection in an emergency. It makes
your telephone more valuable by in
creasing its usefulness.
All yop have to do is call the Tele
phone Business Office and say: “I'd
like to have an extension telephone
installed." Why not order yours today ?
Orders for main telephone service are sometimes delayed because
of shortages of central office and other equipment, which are not
involved in the installation of extension telephones.
