ABOUT SPORTS
By MIKE EIS
A Good Sport Is A
Good-Will Ambassador
I chose the slogan reproduced
above because to me it has a
great deal of meaning and a defi
nite purpose to all our people.
Modern American Jewish youth
take a terrific part in sports. And
in becoming good sportsmen, they
automatically make themselves
Good-Will Ambassadors. So tn
combining this interest with Jew
ish background, we make both
subjects very acceptable to our
youngsters.
Good sportsmanship was a very
strong contributing factor to vic
tory in Israel during hostilities.
Our Palmach troops were the
equivalent to British Shock Com
mandos, or American Rangers.
The elite of any Army and cer
tainly the most highly trained.

both British Commando training
and the Israel Palmach Course.
Commando training was child's
play in comparison. In order to

My job kept me at sea mostly. I Betty Cohen for the losers.
On one occasion I met a modest
Palmach youth who had his fin
gers in a cast. Overcome with
curiosity and with considerable
coaxing, I extracted the cause of
his injuries.
The British, he explained, had
set up radar stations all along the
coast of Palestine during World
War II, employing Jewish scien
tists and labor in the project.
These radar stations during the
fight for Israel were being used
in locating our “so called’’ illegal
ships jammed with settlers. Na
turally these scientists informed
our intelligence that a small bit of
mechanism in the core of the ra
dar equipment held the secret to
the entire operation. If this small
item was removed, tht station
would be rendered useless. The
youngster with the fingers in a
cast was a member of the force
chosen to remove those core pieces.

The other game found DOZ far
too strong for the non-coached
SDG group and the result was a
17 to 3 victory for DOZ, enabling
them to continue their undefeated
record. The winning pitcher was
Phylis Gershon, who allowed only
six hits and helped her own cause
by getting two hits. The heavy
hitters for DOZ were Babs Hill

Every one of us has a job to do
in being good-will ambassadors
and good sports.
Unfortunately there are narrow
minded people who judge a minor
ity by the actions of a few, so why
can’t we all work to be a credit to
the American and the Jewish
people? I’m sure we can and will
help to do this by developing our
youth both physically and mental
ly—always placing Jewish culture
as essential and letting the young
ster make his own decision in the
final analysis, if necessary. At
least, he will not be able to say,
“My parents never gave me the
opportunity to be a Jew.” Re
member! Hitler made a million
new Jews in Germany.
