ABOUT SPORTS C A J
A Good Sport Is A
-Will Ambassador
By MIKE EIS
Well, he did it. A great horse,
that Palestinian and after two
promising starts in the Kentucky
Derby and the Preakness in which
he came from behind to win out
third and second, it was time for
him to stick his neck out front.
The Jersey State was the race
and place and the gallant runner
pulled ahead until he galloped to
the lead of the small—but keenly
competitive field. And there was
n’t a drop of rain anywheres.

Sunday night’s the time, folks,
for the boxing exhibition at the
Alliance. Athletic Director Peskin
and Boxing Coach Hilley have
rounded up quite a program of
athletic prowess. It’ll be some
thing to see. Good to see such
progress made in this manly art

Really, that will be something!
Meanwhile, we should all join in

accomplished this last season at

it. . . .

Hear Ralph Edwards’ program
lately? The weekday one on which
Barney Ross, ex-welterweight
champ, was the guest. When Bar
ney’s exciting and inspirational
story unfolded over the mike,
some of the greatest sport names
appeared on the show sponsored
by a leading cigarette manufac
turer. Besides Tony Canzoneri,
Jimmy McLarnin and Henry Arm
strong; his mother and brother,
and of course the famous referee
and friend Dave Miller were there
and these figures from Ross’
Guadalcanal service days:
Maine Chaplain Father Fred
eric Gehring and Dick Adkins of
Los Angeles, whose life Ross
saved in the alctlon that won iiim
the Silver Star and the President
ial Citation.

Understand all the club swim
ming pools are now open after the
usual refurbishing to make locker
rooms and the water holders more
attractive. And with the heat on—
the summer heat that is—a pool or
lake is just the place to be . . .
Find one in the public parks if
you’re not a member of a club . . .
We can’t honestly call the slot
machines a form of wholesome
sports, but they’re very much with
us. The Mayfair Club has a new
one to end all one-arm-bandits.
The sucker is even spared the
labor of pulling down the familiar
lever. Instead, after depositing
either a nickle or quarter, or both,
in the slot of his choice, he lightly
touches a button. Then things be
gin to happen. Wheels turn, lights
go on and off, gears coo and purr.
The juke-like machine literally
reaches out and strokes the player
in the right direction (counter
pocket book-wise) . . . and in the
end, his money goes down the
shute just as fast.

Win Two Games
Two more victories were chalk
ed up by the teams of Atlanta
JWV Post, 112, in the City Night
Softball League.
Kitty Katz pitched his team to
all-6 victory over the Gas Light
crew. The team's heavy battery of
hitters really started rolling with
Julius Silverman, Hank Levinson
and Stanley Silverman chalking
up homers.
The other JWV nine took the
Optimist Alumni to the cleaners
emerging on the top end of an 8
to 5 game. Rittenbaum did the |
pitching.
