President of organizations and publicity chairmen are
especially advised of the following:
In order to work out a more equitable proportion be
tween local and national news, we find it necessary to ask
that organizational releases be kept to the point and un
padded. We feel this will make our columns more inter
esting to all readers and enhance the value of the meeting
notices themselves. This does not mean we will carry less
organizational news but we hope that the material we
carry will be shorter and contain less plugs of a pointless
and propaganda nature.
Publicity chairmen will find their material more wel
come if their copy reaches us well before the deadline,
typewritten (though legible longhand is acceptable),
double spaced, on one side of the paper only—and void of
such extraneous matter as “ail members are urged to at
tend,” “an attractive program has been arranged,” or even
“important meeting.” It is presumed the notice itself is to
inform members—that details of the program will divulge
whether or not the program is attractive or important.
We say such notices will be “more welcome.” We are al
ways glad to rewrite material and to help regarding pub
licity—provided we have the time. In the push and rush
.. of deadlines, we may not always get around to rewriting,
so a notice than can be passed on immdiately to our print
ers will necessarily be more welcome—and certainly
thereby more advantageous to the organization itself. We
do not think it adds greatly to a story to have lists of hos
tesses, or invited guests unless the latter have accepted.
Their inclusion then is obligatory.
Our best suggestion about acceptable material is “Tell
the story of the meeting—and then simply stop. Do not
try to spread it out to take up more space. Padding will be
obvious and may mean the notice will not be printed. Tell
all of the story—but keep to the point and brief.’
