VIENNA, Aug. 15 (JTA)-The
remains of Dr. Theodor Herzl and
his family were formally trans
ferred today to the Israeli Govern
inent in a ceremony held in Vien
na’s concert hall following a reli
gious service conducted in a Syna
Rogue.
In accepting the coffins on behalf
of the Israeli Government, Dr.
Kurt Lewin, Israeli representative
in Austria, said that Dr. Herzl’s
grave will be the first sanctuary
of the Jewish state.
Thousands of Jews formed long
lines outside the synagogue to pay
their last respects to the founder
of the Zionist movement- Dr.
Herzl’s coffin, covered by an Israeli
flag, rested near the caskets of his
parents and his sister, whose re
mains were brought from Buda
pest. A guard of honor was com
posed of representatives of all Jew
ish organizations in this country.
At the ceremony marking the
official transfer of Dr Herzl’s re
mains to the safekeeping of the
Government of Israel, more than
2,000 persons gathered to hear the
premiere recital of Malerkalk-
stein’s symphonic work, “David.”
Officials of the Austrian Govern
ment, as well as leaders of the
Jewish community, eulogized the
late Zionist leader.
VIENNA, (JTA)—Heavy rains
fell here this week as the remains
of Dr Theodor Herzl. founder of
political Zionism, and his parents,
were exhumed from Doebling Cein
etery outside this city and were
transferred to the Vienna Syna
gogue, preparatory to their re
moval to Israel in accordance with
Dr. Herzl’s last wishes.
Some 200 leading members of
the Vienna Jewish community wit
nessed the exhumation. Dr- Kurt

LITTLE, BUT OH MY
Again, I see a new crop of those
stories revolving about the small
ness of the state of Israel.
The latest is of the Israeli who
asks a newcomer what he planned
to do the following day.
‘I think I shall go on a tour of
Israel.”
“And what will you do in the
afternoon?” is the rejoinder.
The old joke on the same idea
was about the orthodox Jew who
found Palestine objectionable be
cause there was no place “aus zu
gehn shmona esray."
NO PARVAH TEETH
A correspondent from Chicago
complains of a friend of his who,
he thinks, carries religion to an
extreme.
"This is a free country, and I
respect every man who has sin
cere religious convictions. After
all, it is the men of religion who
build up a country. Take the
Puritan fathers, they were very
religious, but this orthodox Jew
ish friend of mine goes a little too |
far for me. You know, he has two I
sets of teeth, a ‘milchige’ and a 1
‘fleishigh.’ Think of that!"
As for us, it seems that this man
is not so religious. What about
“parvah” food? How does he eat
them? No set for them?
WASTING WATER
Time magazine quotes an old
Spanish saying. There are three
ways to waste water, by extending
a river into the ocean, by diluting
wine and by baptizing a Jew.

Since I am retiring from business,
if elected. I would devote full
time to the important work of the
City Council.
Before retiring, for thirty-two
years I was Manager of the Gold
Shield Rug & Carpet Cleaning
Plant. Other than my business, my
chief interests have always been
centered in civic and religious
work.

/ FAVOR Rent Control:
It would be a mistake to remove overall rent-
control in Atlanta now. So long as the shortage
of low-cost housing continues, our citizens of
modest means must be protected. As your
Mayor—I will protect you.
I Favor Adjustments In HakuSHIP CASES:
There are some cases where owners of small
apartments cannot meet operating costs under
old ceilings, and some instances where rents
are not high enough to pay existing mort
gages. These hardship cases are entitled to
relief. It would benefit both tenant and owner.
I favor THIS type of rent-ceiling adjustment
ONLY.
It Is ABSOLUTELY FALSE:
that I have attended any meetings of Building
and Loan Associations, or building owners. I
challenge Mr. Hartsfield to offer PROOF of
these false charges. If you want to know who
REALLY IS in league with the big landlords,
ask Mr. Hartsfield who his big campaign con
tributors are.
I’m For SLUM CLEARANCE, Too:
The kind of slum-clearance that clears slums—
not that utilizes open fields. I'm for housing
built to provide homes for the people who
lived in the houses torn down, at rents they can
afford to pay!
It is YOU, Mr. Mayor, who is partly responsible
for Atlanta's housing shortage. Why haven't
YOU been paving streets since the war—in sec
tions where veterans could have built their
homes?
When Wilson Wyatt, the National Housing
Expediter, wired all Mayors (you included), to
set up committees to push housing and channel
material to our returning veterans, why did
you DO NOTHING! Why did you pass this
important oroblem on to the Chamber of
Commerce?
If you had pushed housing, Mr. Hartsfield, and
oaved streets where homes could have been
built fas I will do when I am Mayor), Atlanta
would not have had the acute housing short
age it has today.
