Israel Signs
Genocide Pact
LAKE SUCCESS, (JTA)—Is
rael this week became the 28th
nation to sign the U. N. convention
and punishment of the crime of
genocide. Aubrey S. Eban, Israeli
representative to the United Na
tions, who signed the convention,
made the following statement:
“The signature of the genocide
convention by Israel evokes the
memory of the brutal slaughter of
millions of Jews by Nazi regimes
in Europe. Many peoples were af
flicted by this massacre, but none
lost a greater proportion of its
sons than did the Jewish people.
“The United Nations, which de
feated the Nazi tyranny, has in
this convention expressed the re
vulsion of civilized mankind
against the dread consequences of
persecution and discrimination.
Israel hereby reaffirms its most
intimate concern for the protec
tion and observance of human
rights within the framework ol
the United Nation#,’’

in this state on charges that the
organization has practiced “de
ceit” and “misrepresentation” and
has failed to provide adequate,
modern medical services. The ap
plication was filed by the office
of Attorney General Nathaniel L.
Goldstein, which pointed out that
the H.C.R.S. was not associated
with either the National Jewish
Hospital or the National Jewish
Home for Crippled Children, both
of Denver.
The charges were denied by
Mitchell' Salem Fisher, attorney
for the hospital, who labelled
them “plain nonsense” and added
that the Attorney General has no
proof to support them. Mr. Fisher
also called the action another de
velopment in an internal political
fight.
The Attorney Gener’s petition
stated that in 1947 the hospital
raised $820,000 nationally, with
$327,000 being collected in New |
York. It charged that the funds
were obtained because contribu
tors were led to believe that “the
organization is operating a mod
ern, completely equipped, proper
ly staffed and medically superior
type of institution for the care
and treatment of victims of tuber
culosis.” Asserting that this was
not so, the affidavit said that so
liciting funds under these circum
stances was “tantamount to a
fraud on the public.”
Assistant Attorney General The
odore R. Ostrow, who filed the
petition, said that during most of
its existence the organization had
justified the faith of the public
in its work, but that some time
ago the patients had organized a
grievance committee to make
known their dissatisfaction with
the present hospital, administration
and services. As a result, he said,
the Jewish Consumptive Relief
Society’s advisory council in N. Y.
had appointed an investigating
committee to check into the pat
ients’ charges.
The results of this investigation,
Mr. Ostrow said, showed that the
hospital had not made available
to patients such modern treat
ment as labectomy and pneumon
ectomy, that there had not been
an adequate check-up of patients,
that routine examinations were
not made and that a consultative
staff was not maintained. He add
ed that patients were denied cer
tain drugs because of their alleged
costliness.

tution.
Philip Hornbein, Sr., a vice j
president of the institution and i
one of the original founders of the |
J.C.R.S. in 1904, said the libel suit
will be filed in New York at the
earliest possible moment against
the New York critics of the sana
torium.
Mr. Hornbein called the accu
sations against the J.C.R.S. “false,
fantastic and slanderous—malici
ously so.” He said the New York
group has been attempting for
two years to seize control of the
J.C.R.S., but has been defeated
twice in the Federal courts in N.
Y. 1 in their efforts to hold up
funds which had been solicited for
the upkeep of patients in the san
atorium.
